I got wait-listed at 3 top-tierish college....

I've been put on the wait list by uchicago, washu and northwestern... How should I interpret this? Do I still have any chances to get into other colleges? (hyp, Stanford, duke, jhu)

Given that you got into MIT I would not be worried.

rainbowrose’s story also should give you reason to hope :)

I got waitlisted at NU too :(. If it helps, someone wrote on another thread about how her daughter got waitlisted at NU and accepted to Yale and Dartmouth. If you applied as an econ major, I’d say your chances are looking better (NU and UChi are both known for it and, while major choice doesn’t play a very large role at all, it could be the difference between the acceptance and the waitlist).

Also, WashU is need-aware which may have also made the difference.

I also saw you got into MIT! Your chances are DEFINITELY still up there.

I also got waitlisted by UChicago and WashU!
And I got accepted by MIT and received a Columbia likely letter.

It is a bit puzzling, but I am still very thankful =)

Thank you guys.

@storyofmylife: I’m very thankful too! I’m just feeling quite confused over the reasons that got me on the wait-lists of those colleges. =S Maybe MIT’s many mini essays just allowed me to show the different facets of my personality more…

Top Tier-ish? UChicago and Northwestern are in Top 12 in country, certainly challenging admissions (as you have encountered), so the “ish” seems somewhat curious to me?

What does it take for you to consider a school as top tier (minus the “ish”)?

Is there a chance these schools may have recognized your lack of regard in your supplementals? Something to consider.

I got waitlisted by both Northwestern and WashU, in addition to the rejection at Penn ED.

My chance thread is as above. Can anyone tell me what exactly is seriously wrong with my application from the information available? I haven’t gotten into a single school yet.

@hinsdale1:
sorry if I offended you- perhaps I hadn’t explain myself clearly.
I called the colleges “top-tierish” because I’m not very sure about what the definition of “top tier” is. (I don’t live in the US) I looked at many threads on CC and it seems like many people only regard the ivies, MIT and Stanford as “top tier” colleges. I didn’t call them “top-tierish” because I don’t regard them highly (I know they are world-class universities); I called them “top-tierish” because I was trying to use the term in the way CCers seem use it.

@mathematicism: from your stats, I really can’t find anything that’s “seriously wrong”.

^You really did not offend me in any way. You can call them whatever you like. Being in the top 12 of 3,000+ of anything is certainly top tier by anyone’s definition. I was simply suggesting that perhaps the adcoms were able to pickup your lower-ISH regard for these schools in your essay responses (why NU?, etc), interviews (or lack thereof), number of admission office contacts, etc. when gauging your true interest (adcoms are often pretty astute) and this may have accounted for your lack of positive admission outcome at these schools.

@mathemetician

There’s certainly nothing wrong on an objective basis with your Tests/Grades. The fact that you’re Wait Listed at NW and Wash U, shows that these schools think that you’re qualified and capabable of doing the work there.

The simple fact, however, is that these top tier schools cannot accept all qualified students. To be honest, no one knows why a school accepts one student and not another.

Mathematicism

I am sorry about your admission results so far. You are one of the strongest applicants in ANY COLLEGE. Keep your head up! You will get into one of the great colleges very soon.
