So I told this kid today I was probably going to BC

…and he told me BC is overrated and overpriced

is he correct? if not, what would you say to him to explain to him he’s wrong?

BC is similarly priced to other private universities in the North East. BC has the best combination of academics, athletics, arts, and location of any college in the Northeast.

Did he by any chance get rejected by BC ?
If you love the school, and can afford to go, don't let him rain on your parade.
Most schools are overpriced, if you ask a parent that pays:)

And where is this other kid going to college?

That may explain his comment! LOL

I graduated from BC a few years ago, and I believe that your acquaintance did not lie to you when he said that BC is overrated. He probably didn't lie to you when he said that BC is overpriced, either.

xzews...you are just the bearer of bad news

Lil Wayne Fan

My son is coming up from NJ to the same program as you on 4/20- we are so excited, don't let someone else (who maybe didn't get in) get under your skin.
There is always going to be someone who had a bad experience at a certain school, but in the end this is your Life, live it to the fullest, if BC is your future, Go for it!! It may very well be by son's.

All private schools are overpriced.

As for being overrated, I cannot attest to that seeing how BC is the only college I've attended. I would say that academically, its acceptable but nothing mind-blowing.

ClassicGuitar, what subject did you major in?

Too expensive?
My daughter is a freshman at BC. May 1st begins the monthly payments for her sophomore year.

She LOVES everything about BC and is so proud to be an Eagle. She worked really hard in high school and was rewarded by admission to the school of her choice.
Her roommate experience has been excellent. The 3 roommates, two next door neighbors and across the hall neighbors are getting an 8-man next year.

Unlike what many others have said regarding easy classes she has been very challenged as a chemistry major and has loved the CORE requirement courses, several of which have as few as 11 students.

She is a non scholarship varsity athlete and the coaches have been awesome and supportive of assisting her in time management/balancing of 4 hours daily practices with a rigorous class load.

Soon she will participate in a BC sponsored mission project.

Too expensive? No. My husband and I have jobs that pay well enough that we don't qualify for one penny of financial aid despite having three kids in college/boarding school but I'm able to witness my daughter living her dream by attending BC and it and Boston has to offer. It's worth the expense.

As I have said on other boards, asking a question of this nature on any board elicits the usual unsubstantiated rah-rah fanboy responses. There are endless examples, go to a Mac computer forum and ask

So I told a friend that I am buying a Mac instead of a PC, and he told me that Macs are over-priced and over-rated, what do you think

[/quote]

ans see what responses you get. If you want a meaningful answer, ask the question in a neutral manner so that you appeal to people's intellect, not passions.

My son is a sophamore at BC. His experience so far has been worth every penny...and we don't have a lot of money. Our daughter will be at another college next year and we just hope she will find the same happiness that our son has found at BC. Congrats to all who were accepted!

xznews, I'm still undecided but I'm thinking of doing either a chemistry major, math major, or a history/philosophy double major I've narrowed it down to those three. The chemistry and history departments seem good, but math is a little weak at BC.

Guitar -- I'm curious as to why you feel the math dept. at BC is "a little weak." In what areas? Or in comparison to what other schools?

The math department at BC is small and not as well funded as math departments in nearby schools like Harvard and MIT. The professors in the math department, in my limited experience, have not been as good as professors in other departments. When you think of BC, "math" does not pop into your head.

ClassicGuitar11, which professors are you referring to?

I don't want to name names--a public form is not the right place to do it. But seeing as how you majored in physics, I'm assuming that you have had plenty of experience with BC math professors. What did you think of the math department overall? About sciences at BC in general? I would be interested to hear you opinions.

I had mixed experiences; some classes were laughable compared to others. I don't have a proper frame of reference to compare the strength of BC's math department against (you made reference to Harvard's and MIT's math departments, but what a comparison...), since BC is the only university I have attended, but I felt more challenged in my AP calc class in high school than I did in my math classes at BC. As far as the science departments are concerned, BC is known to have a decent chemistry department.

I try to ignore people like that. That was essentially rude. Do I detect a hint of jealously in this person's tone?

Guitar, are you not just a freshman at BC and doing pre-med? How many math classes have you actually taken at BC? And at what level? It seems to me that you cannot have taken more than 2 math classes, and those would not have been at an advanced level even if you took AP Calc in high school. Yet you seem to be disparaging an entire department.

Certainly BC's math department is not as big or well-funded as Harvard and MIT, but neither are any of BC's science departments. (As stated by others, it's not really fair to compare BC with top 10 schools.) My son is a prospective math major who has done quite a bit of research and BC's math department is indeed respected by working professionals -- but it obviously is not a top 10 program. For a school of BC's size, the math department is actually pretty good.
