So I'm actually taking the AP test in ___. Now what?

In my case, I do get "credit" for most of my APs (calc, spanish lit, etc.)

My question is, what does this credit actually go towards? Fulfilling distribution-esque requirements? Or does it just go into some nebulous cache of credits?
And how does this position you once you get on campus?
(I'm not planning on graduating early or anything of the sort. If this frees up my schedule to explore unfamiliar departments and such, then wonderful.)

Some credits allow you placement into other classes. Others simply reduce the number of classes you have to take in order to graduate. You normally need 35 credits, so, for example, if you get 5 AP credits, you only have to take 30 classes at Dartmouth.

Also, these credits never satisfy distributives or world culture reqs.

thanks for such a clear answer!
