So I'm not much of a reader...

For the "List the books for pleasure/required readings" I listed 7 books total. And for the electronic publications, I don't know if this really counts, or if I was better off leaving it blank, but I just put "Facebook"
It was kinda late at night and I just wanted to get the App submitted really.

But when it came to the movies/tv shows section
I listed 35 Movies and 5 Tv shows, using up all 600 characters.
I got Netflix back in February and I've been watching and rewatching a lot of movies if you couldn't tell, but I only listed my absolute favorite.

I love movies so much that I started a "Film Appreciation Club" in my school and I explain about that in my Common App in the "Touch on an extracurricular" section.

So do you think they'll take this as all I do is watch movies all day and not really read at all
or
That I'm really passionate about this club I started so I've been doing a lot of research to keep it running

I think it’ll be a mixed bag. While it’s great that you have passion for something and showed it, going to Columbia will force you to become a reader. Just look at the books you have to read for Literature Humanities. If you listed 7 classics or dense reads, I think that will be alright.

i only listed four books

yeah I guess it kind of depends, but I would have definitely brushed up more on the academic side via readings.

Also, since u started this film appreciation club, it might be different. However, if this club is basically just a club where you watch movies all day, and the 35 movies you put down were all movies like the hangover (lol) or something, than I would say its a bit of a risk and it might have hurt your application. On the other hand, if you’re watching educational films and films with value (such as glory), and you talked in your app about stuff you do for the club you found (analyze films, writing critiques, getting lauded by local newspaper, you know, stuff like that) then I would say it shows continuity and give you a unique perspective (advantage, in a way) in the applicant pool

GL

It really depends on your overall application–that’s what “holistic” admissions is all about. If you stated that you planned on majoring in English or Philosophy for example, then you might have some problems. However, if you’re going into something unrelated to reading like engineering or film, then it won’t hurt you too much. Besides, the cultural short answers are just one of the many parts of the application process, and as difficult as it is to get in, just about everyone has to have a relatively weak area somewhere; maybe that’s yours.

I got in ED with 4 books listed. I think I had something like 4 magazines on the publications list also.
