I was accepted to Dietrich and from the other threads on this forum, it appears to me that before I transfer, I have to prove myself by taking some intro courses (if I want to transfer into Physics, I have to take some intro Physics courses at MCS). So...what do I do in the meantime? Am I an undeclared? Do I have to pick a major inside Dietrich? WHAT DO I DO? Help appreciated!

First of all, you may want to consider adding an additional major in Physics. You would still be in Dietrich, but you would major in something in Dietrich as well as Physics. This would probably require no application process, and may avoid some of the headaches (especially gen ed related headaches) involved in transferring.

But to answer your original question, when you enter Dietrich you will be undeclared. You will not even be allowed to declare your major until midway through your second semester, and you will not be forced to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. Regardless, what your major is doesn’t mean much if you’re going to change it later anyway.

In the meantime I recommend taking those intro physics courses, and trying to take courses which satisfy requirements in both MCS and Dietrich simultaneously. The schools will have different gen eds, and you may find that working only towards Dietrich gen eds will involve “wasted” courses if you transfer into MCS. Similarly, working only towards MCS gen eds could backfire if you don’t get into MCS, and likewise will incite some harassment from your academic advisor who will be on your case to make progress towards your Dietrich requirements.
