I go to a community college in northern California but I'm extremely unhappy here. I want to transfer to another community college for spring semester (I wanted to transfer to ccsf but I heard they're losing accreditation). So I just have a few questions: Will my financial aid transfer for spring semester? and when getting loans, I can use that for rent at my apartment, right? I know that many people suggest not taking out loans, but I am very, very unhappy. I plan to have a very good career too, so I will be able to pay my loans.

What aid are you getting now? Pell grants, federal loans?

Are you dependent or independent? this determines how much you can take out in loans.

Why are you unhappy at your school?

Yes, unless you mess up your classes at your cc that you hated. You should add the new cc to your FAFSA as soon as possible.
Yes.

What does this new CC say its COA is?

Also, the most you can borrow $5500 per year for first year. That’s probably not enough for a Calif apt. How much are the apts that you’re looking at? (including utilities, internet, etc).

I transferred from ccsf, currently the tuition is only 46$ a unit. Plus you can get BOARD OF GOVERNER WAIVER, this is unique to ccsf, from what ive gathered. You will have to apply to fafsa, and BOG, even if you dont get FA, the BOG acts like fa and drastically lowers your cost at ccsf. i forget how you qualify for BOG though.

The accredidation for ccsf is uncertain, they said it will close next june, or july, but continue to appeal its process.
The problem came from how they managed the budget, The trustees, or chancellors blames the students for “taking” up space, because they failed a class the previous semester, and say it costs the school alot. They also blamed the departments for having too many, yea and they cut classes that are vital for transfer students. 92% of the budget did not go to the school itself, only 8%. From what ive gathered 92% went into the trustees,(previous chancellors) pocket. in addition it went into the retirement fund for ccsf faculty. Also they gave full benefits in health, dental, car insurance to part time professors, and faculty members. and the rest going to those almost vacant, 9 campuses for maintenance. It was absurb how they built a new building next to the main ccsf campus when they are in a budget crisis. the last i heard was that building costed 4 million.

APPLY FOR BOG waiver, its well reduce your cost 90% at ccsf. I had bog, and was taking 11 units before i transferred and i only payed 26$.

I’m receiving pell grants. I got the full 5500 this year. I’m dependent but I have a single mother that doesn’t make much. I’m unhappy where I’m at because I just do not like the atmosphere, and I feel like I’m not getting a good enough college experience. The professors are very unprofessional and also because I’d like to move out from home.

I’m not sure. Like I said, I wanted to go to ccsf but the accreditation is all messed up. Rent monthly is around $550.

$550/month rent in CA??? Wow. No, I do not doubt, just surprised.
How about utility, food, clothes, transportation, mandatory deposit, etc.?
Even without those added expenses, 12x$550>$5500.

CCSF (City College of SF)? You won’t even find a ROOM for $500/month. If you were to rent a room (not apartment) in the Ingleside District near CCSF, it would cost about $950.

Rent monthly is around $550

Do you mean for “your share” of a two bedroom? I still think that’s low for Calif unless that doesn’t include utilities, internet, water, etc.

What city is this?

There were beds at UCB that were advertised at 1000/mo… more than one listing at/around that price.

$550 might be for a space on a floor :-)

Do not transfer to CCSF, it is in severe trouble right now. You may have to transfer again. A better choice would be one of the East Bay CC’s. Even better would be a CC in an area that doesn’t have high rents.

You should finish at your CC and transfer to a CSU or a UC. You are saving a lot of money living at home. It is never fun servicing debt–you may need time to find a job and time to get a decent salary and you don’t need to be making extra payments when you are just starting out.

$550 is sharing a room with one other roommate. I have a friend that lives in Park Merced and shares a room for $500 a month and I have looked into multiple other rooms. So yes, $500-$550 a month. The only reason I am now second guessing is because of the situation City College of San Francisco is in. I still want to switch spring semester, though. I am fully aware that food + transportation and other necessities obviously cost more. My parents would somewhat be able to help me out with that. I do not come from a very wealthy household but my parents would help me with all they can.

For California residents enrollment fee per semester unit is $46.00 plus a bit more for miscellaneous fees.

What will be your plan for 2015 when CCSF closes? You will move on to your 3rd CC and relocate housing again?
