I would like to know please!
And also, what if your academics aren't the strongest but your ECs are pretty good and your essays are really good? Do you still have a chance?

Well I think if your SAT scores are insanely good (2100+) and you have a decent GPA, your essays most likely won’t be as heavily weighed against you. However, if you have a low GPA, your ECs need to be amazing (I think) along with your essays. Also if your GPA is low but you have a relatively high SAT your SAT score could offset the low GPA. :)

I hope that helps…

It is one of the most Important part in your application. If you have a 1600 score in SAT ( out of 2400), and write a solid essay…you are in!! How ever if you have excellent grades and write a very clumsy essay…they might not take you!. Essays are something which are so important that it sometimes completely decides whether you will be admitted or not.

Best of luck!

UW takes the essays very seriously. So if you have less-than-stellar stats (like me!), a strong essay can help you out.

oh nice
does anyone know anyone who had kind of a poor academic gpa but stellar essays and got it?
haha just wondering (:

I know someone who says he wrote really great essays and had his AP English teacher look them over with him. He got in last year (accepted, not waitlisted or anything) with a 3.2 UW and… 1800 SAT? He was In State, and didn’t really have a lot of extra currics, or any big awards.

I believe that UW won’t deny admission if you have good SAT score and GPA, got good recommendation and you have not committed major booboos in your essays. Rest of the stuff count more for those who either don’t have good scores or want to get into specific program such CS, honors etc. Hope I have not offended those who are counting on ECs and essays to get into UW. UW is a very good school but it is not like Ivys or northeastern LACs where most applicants have good GPA+SAT.

My sister had a 4.0 GPA and got accepted even though the last line of her essay read:
“And that is why I want to attend the University of Michigan.” XD

I don’t know if UW has the resources to go through so many and carefully read those essays for general admission.

Also, Maxxwell, UW doesn’t look at recommendations except for honors.

you should treat everything as very important, and an outstanding essay can do nothing but help you.
