So my race is?...

Hiya, huys. i will be applying to college in 2014 but I figured I'd get this out of the way now. I know many questionaries ask about race, but I'm never shore what to put. HELP MEEEEP!!! I am unconfortable asking my parents what we are (they are very private people), so if I provide a description, maybe you can help. I have pinkish/whitish/yellowish/reddish/brownish skin, and brown hair and eyes. I am 5'4 and 134 lbs. with biggish muscles. As far as know my family has been in the U.S. for a number of years, but hear's the problem--I HAVE ALSO BEEN TO AFRICA!!! Many of my family members have been in Africa for a number of yeRS, too. So I am wondering if my race will qualify as Californian or Black. Blargh!!! Thanks beforehanded for the advise, people! :)

(Hmmm… tro— no, I can’t get myself to say. Blergh argh! ::cough:: ■■■■■ ::cough:: Or joke thread? Please the latter)

My suggestion, just leave it blank if you don’t know. Or check off “Other” and write in “Blue”. I wanted to do that on my application just because I love the color blue and I felt it was no one’s business to know my ethnicity, so you’ll be doing me a favor if you write that on there for me.

Thank you for the advise. (randome question tho–why are you mentioning those dolls with weird hare? i haven’t seen ■■■■■ since the '90s. and no, this is a serious thread).

Hahahahaha

This suggests that you may be Asian.

Haha, ■■■■■ fail.

No human can be this dumb.

gay eskimo.

Why do people feel the need to post joke threads like this? I’m all about humor, but this is just irritating.

^^That’s the point.

Whenever it says “race” I just write “-a-roni, the San Fransisco treat! Ding ding!”

We were in the police station and my friends parents were there and his mom is white and his dad is black and when the officer asked what his race was he said other, and the cop got really mad and he kept asking the same thing and he kept saying none of the above and the cop kept repeating all the choices. And me and all my friends were cracking up and his parents were getting really angry and the cops were really embarased. I dont think they should ask race anymore since everyone is not really just one color anymore. Theres alot of people who think they are white, but they have other color ancestors. And they can prove it with DNA.

Race? Human.

Although… the OP makes me question whether or not human would be the appropriate response. Kind of sounds like a care bear or something…

Race is as much a societal construct as it is predisposition. Certainly, a person with 1/8 African heritage and 7/8 European heritage would be considered black and not white (at least in America). Maybe this is because of the way race was defined back in the day of slavery. Also, Hispanic is considered by many to be a race even though it is a lingusitic and cultural identity rather than an identity of lineage or genetics.

Even among black-skinned Africans, Indians, or Europeans, one can differentiate them into several different races based on unique features. The Khoisan and the Bantu groups in Africa for example are significantly different in appearance. So all in all, race in the way we define it is quite arbitrary and we are all somewhat more similar than we think.

Sorry IndianPwnerDude, but race is genetic, not something made up. But so is eye color and height, and nobody gets forced to the back of a bus for being too short (although maybe that’s not such a bad idea…KIDDING!!!).

I think what you meant was that ethnicity is a social construct, and it kind of is. But what I think you are REALLY really talking about is culture. And cultural fractures happen to exist along racial lines much of the time (but not always).

Is is this cultural-differences-along-racial-lines which get the most attention in the press and among activists and so forth, because they are so visible. If low-income, uneducated, white southern rednecks and hillbillies were visibly different racially from upper-class New England elites, well, redneck jokes would be banned from tv for being racially insensitive to a poor minority, for one thing. Thomas Sowell, the economist, has done a lot of great writing on race, culture, and so forth. Very worthwhile reading.

Yes I never argued that it is genetic. Maybe I explained myself incorrectly. The way that people identify themselves as a member of one race or another is heavily influenced by society.

By the way some other things that are genetic can be discriminated upon. I thnk intelligence is partly genetic and certainly employers and schools can and should discriminate based upon that.

I think you should focus on your spelling, grammar etc…

Affirmative action alone won’t get you anywhere.

Okay you have bigger problems than not knowing your race if you don’t have the kind of relationship with your parents to ask them about your heritage… I mean, it’s YOUR heritage… It’s not an item that they own the rights to…

Okay. This thread is officially not funny anymore. Not that it really was in the first place.

Obvious ■■■■■ is obvious.
