So-so GPA but goes to best high school in the country?

Hey,
I attend the best girl's school in Taiwan (There are entrance exams for high school, and the acceptance rate for mine is 1%). Needless to say, I have a hard time getting a good GPA.
To make things even harder, I transferred to the Humanities and Social Studies advanced class in my junior year. Those girls kick ass...
I got 2 B's in 10th grade, math and earth sciences. How big a dent will that make in my GPA?

Don’t worry much about the grades, the adcoms in the USA specialized in the region knows how to valuate your accomplishements. Just do your best. Taipei First Girls is highly regarded and you will be well recieved. Make sure the SAT, Toefl and ACT scores are high.

My TOEFL score is 117, is that acceptable if I want to try for more prestigious schools? I also heard that its really hard for international students to get financial aid or scholarships from the schools. Roughly how high should my SAT score be to have a chance of getting one?
Thanks for replying so quickly. I’m sorry to bother you with so many questions.

Everyday, there is a thread like OP for international students FA in the USA Universities on CC. OP should do some search before asking a question like that.

You can do your search in the Financial Aid or the Parents sections or even in the International section.

As I have read before, there is only 6 universities that has MERIT aid for international UG students. The NEED based aids are more liberal, but it is very hard to get.

Toefl scores acceptance are school specific. Check with intended institutions.

Whoa first time chancing upon a TFGer’s thread.
(Thus I have surfaced, and have come to say hi. HOLA fellow classmate : D !)
I feel as if I should know you…?

Financial aid: See if the school’s need-blind for int’ls, if not, then it might affect your chances quite a bit. (You could always try Harvard, I think they’re needblind…)

I think MOST 1st-tier schools don’t need TOEFLs, but there are a few that do-- like artloversplus said, you should check individual College admissions websites.
As for SATs and other stats, USNews.com is great for more general data, you should check that out if you haven’t done so yet.

Hope this helped!
(artloversplus, do you mind me asking whether you’re from Taiwan as well?)

yup. but I am an empty nester. we have done our durties, its your world now. go get it.

btw, this is NOT the first TFGer’s on CC. There was one girl she was admitted to Tsinghwa and wants to TRANSFER on her first year! That was the wildest story I have ever heard.

Haha no don’t say that ;O but thanks!
And really? Tsinghua is the school I’d like to go to (should I not get into any of my American dream schools…)
It’s a great school! For really science-inclined people like me, that is.
Seriously I’d consider it before NTU.
To each her own maybe  Though I’d never dream of doing something like that.

Actually I think many of us lurk around this forum, we just don’t post XD
–I mean this website is the best thing after official websites. Well, sometimes better than those.
