So there's this brown UPS envelope waiting for me when I get home...

And of course I freak out! AHHH OLIN OLIN OLIN!

I tear it open and...no Olin! Agh, what a let down! It was from Illinois Institute of Technology. "What do they want?!? What is so important that they had to send it by UPS?

I just received my acceptance to IIT this weekend with 1/2 tution/room and board scholarship so i didn't know what else they could be sending me.

Turns out it's an invitation to Chicago (well I live in St. Louis...it's no Olin) for the full tuition Camras Scholarship interview weekend. Yay!!!! This will be fun! (Yet, still not Olin. :P)

And now I worry as I type this that this will take the place of my CW invite. :(

Also, semi-off topic but I couldn't find the exact amount of the Camras scholarship...everywhere I read it just says "full tuition". Does that mean room and board isn't included I guess...Not really a "free ride." Unless they would add it to my annual $17,200 scholarship they offered me with admission but I seriously doubt that. :P

Sigh... I'm so nervous. I'm going to be at an interview weekend at Deep Springs for a few days during/after in comes, where I probably won't have communication to be able to find out if I get in. I'm looking forward to the trip overall but am going to have a lot on my mind :/

^^ Cool, a weekend at Deep Springs! Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Wow. I'm impressed. Really.

Consider this: Whether you get in or not, you will always remember this weekend, and you will absolutely positively learn something this weekend.

Oh dude that's such a let-down.

I'm starting to really freak out this week... the email said that decisions would be sent no later than February 1st... which means they could arrive earlier? Because Friday is February 1st - and I don't think UPS delivers on Saturdays... though I could be wrong about that. AH FREAK OUT.

Side note: I discovered the existence of Deep Springs a few weeks ago... it sounds SO COOL! I wish they had a girl version. Good luck OAGr.

And congrats to Kevin! Yay for scholarships!

Wow, those two posts above mine were not there when I started writing that post. GO OLIN AND FORUM ACTIVENESS!

i am just so afraid of my parents finding out before me and spoiling the news. i need to be the first who knows....i almost sort of wish you'd know online before anything physical came in the mail so that i could at least find out at my leisure before being confronted with a small rejection letter. although a big ups package would make everything so much more dramatic and fun

omg. so yeah, that email. And they send the invitees first, then the rest. ugh!! So basically, if we haven't gotten anything and come on CC and see that other people have, it's probably not going to be good news.

Heh, Deep Springs sent me the viewbook and an invitation to apply, which was a little perplexing, but I just thought "ok, whatever." Then like a week later they sent me an email saying "oh hey, you're a girl. sorry, we don't take your kind. your scores were high, so we sent you the stuff we send all the boys, but you're not a boy, so uh, yeah, just ignore that." I thought it was amusing. It does sound like a cool place though. Good luck with your interview weekend OAGr!

We're all so nervous!

Good luck all, I'll see you 'round these forums at the end of the week, one way or the other.

WOAHHH I just looked up Deep Springs. For those that don't know:

"Deep Springs is an all-male liberal arts college located on a cattle-ranch and alfalfa farm in California’s High Desert. Electrical pioneer L.L. Nunn founded the school in 1917 on the three pillars of academics, labor, and self-governance in order to help young men prepare themselves for lives of service to humanity. The school's 26 students, along with its staff and faculty, form a close community engaged in this intense project.

Deep Springs operates on the belief that manual labor and political deliberation are integral parts of a comprehensive liberal arts education. (You have to work on the ranch 20 hours/week!)

Each student attends for two years and receives a full scholarship valued at over $50,000 per year. Afterwards, most complete their degrees at the world's most prestigious four year institutions."

Ok, that's like Olin on crack. xP

Olin on crack, + a helluva lotta muscles :D

For the record, Kevin, scaring people like that is not nice. The instant I saw your thread title I started freaking out, because UPS didn't bring me anything today.

But congrats on your scholarship and acceptance!

Also... I am so very nervous. Ugh.

yeah, I've been freaking out for the past week or so, too! i actually get nauseous when I think about it for long enough. Is there a support group for those who don't get in :-)

Haha Lorax, it was nicer than what I first thought about naming the thread:

"OMG I got a brown UPS envelope from Olin!!"

Those were my thoughts when I saw the UPS envelope waiting for me...

xP See, I'm, not THAT mean. And I've been reading a lot about Deep Springs and it's so interesting! I would never want to go there though because of all the work + early rising. (Yes, I'm lazy like that). :P

Yeah, I could never do the early rising thing. That's one of the reasons I'm so in love with Olin--students have keys/access to some things 24 hours a day. Sometimes I work best at odd hours of the night/early morning, so the flexibility would be nice.

And yes, Kevin, the thread title could have been worse. So thanks, I suppose?

Wednesday; The week is already half done!

I'm nervous about the end of the week; heck, I won't even be home on Saturday to receive stuff.

So here's a question: what made Olin catch your guys' interest? For me, that simple little duct tape book got me interested; I started checking out the website, found a couple of blogs... The more I read, the more I was wow'd. I even got a chance to stay there for a week over the Summer via LeadAmerica (which, by the way, was cool except for the copious amounts of other kids there who were QUITE immature), and I absolutely loved the college.

I think that duct tape brochure was the beginning of my serious interest in Olin too... I know I had heard of it before that but I don't really remember from where. Probably my dad had mentioned it to me since he's obsessed with free colleges. But yeah, then the websites, blogs, articles, etc. I just really like the small, community feel, and the general casual attitude (if that's the right way to put it) along with the excellent education.

So do you guys think they'll come on Saturday then? From my google search I gathered that if you pay extra UPS can deliver on Saturday, but otherwise if you overnight something on Friday it won't come until Monday. I'm hoping they'll come even earlier... I just want to know so I can either get super excited or move on with my life. I'm trying really hard to just hope for an invite, not to expect one, because I know Olin is a reach for me. And now is the time where I'm looking back on my application and second guessing everything. Erghhhh.

Last year, I was concerned about the whole "Saturday (non)delivery" possibility. Did that mean that I wouldn't get the envelope until Monday,...and then only if I was invited to CW? I was stressing about what a looong weekend it would be.
As it turned out, the envelope came ON Friday! BTW, the envelope is about 9x12 and is cardboard.
Hopefully Olin will send them out FOR delivery on Friday again.
For those of you that do come to CW, be ready for some fun and see you there!

It's good to see some action here on the Olin Board.

AHHHH! I'm dieing. It's been so hard not to imagine me getting that invite envelope because I have been imagining myself sooo much at Olin and there are just so many great things about it! (grief and support documented here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/426527-falling-love-college-not-good.html WARNING: Patheticness follows :P) However, I know (I KNOW) that where ever I end up will be good for me. I think college is what you make of it.

As for what drew me to Olin, it wasn't the duct tape brochure. I only got that AFTER I requested info. from Olin. (low PSAT score? Not signing up for the college search service? (or whatever it's called)). I heard about the college first here on CC and then read so must about it, and fell in love (literally)!

So good luck to me (xP) and everyone else! I hope we'll all know by Friday.
