and that my parents pay over 100,000 bones for me to attend for 4 years and I am looking around and none of the current Senior class is really getting in anywhere.

Makes me wonder if 100,000+ bucks is worth an education one could get at a local magnet or public school...maybe I should have applied for some of those prestigious boarding schools in New England after all I did have near prefect SSAT scores...........

Private school doesn't mean you'll automatically get into a great school, it helps, but someone who goes to a competitive public school has just as good of a chance.

I think homeschooling is the way to go if you have motivation. I go to a public technology magnet (#21 in the nation), and it's really a joke. I would hate to see a regular high school.

I go to a private prep school and I admit that one of the reasons I ended up deciding to attend was the impressive college matriculation, but as I spend more and more time in my school I realized how unimportant that is. Attending a private school gives us so many opportunities other than great college counseling--there's the people, class conversations, caring teachers, a close knit community, great sports and art programs, etc.

You can get a great education if you are motivated enough. It doesn't matter where you go. I go to a "failing" minority school with a large percentage of drop outs, and we always have kids accepted to the Ivy Leagues + Ivy league equivalents.

Jonathan1: My public school has all of that. I don't think that's particular to private schools, I think that's just "good schools". Granted, my school may just be an anomaly in the system, I know that some of the public schools in my state are horrible

I read an article in the Washington Post a while a go (can't remember the title or the author) that if you control for SAT scores going to an elite high school actually *decreases *your chances at getting into the most competitive universities (because the weight that these colleges put on class rank)

high school isn't about getting into college

if you're smart enough to get into a noteable private school you can get into college. public school students could get in if they wanted

the whole point of private school is getting better teachers, facilities, and experiences. That's what the money is for, not to get people into universities they can get into on their own.

I go to a well known private girl's school and I love it here and it's not because of the college counselor I've never met

btw ssat doesn't determine admission. So many people get 99% and get rejected

i feel the same way, except my school is a 'measly' (compared to you) 10 k a year...my teachers have taught me the wrong stuff and the guidance department is SO incompetent

Actually, I think there is a certain measure of truth to Keshira's and zarathustra's posts. I go to a top public high school, top 100 in the country, not sure of exact rank, and it doesn't use class rank, probably for that reason.
