Dear lzh:
I am writing, with genuine regret, to inform you that the Admissions Committee is unable to offer you transfer admission to Washington University for the Spring 2008 semester.

Selecting students from a strong and talented applicant pool has been very difficult this year. We would like for you to know that the members of the Admissions Committee have given particularly careful and complete attention to each aspect of your application.

We realize the application process can be a stressful one, but admission decisions should not be taken as judgments on your personality, character, or any other qualities that make you who you are. They simply reflect the competitiveness of the process.

We appreciate your interest in Washington University, and we wish you all the best in your future educational endeavors.

On the bright side, you're not exactly alone in being rejected as a transfer. They take roughly a quarter of those who apply as transfers, meaning three quarters are denied. And, as far as I understand, they look more favorably upon transfers for fall than they do spring. So perhaps if you re-apply, which should help display the interest they expect of prospective students, then you'll get in.

aw, I'm really sorry. I truly am. I know how it feels to not get into somewhere you really really wanted to go. Feel better, and please know that, like the letter said, this does not judge you as a person. They don't have the means to truly know you as a person. You would've been a great contribution to their community; they just don't have enough spots. But you can still be a great contribution to your current community; I'm sure you already are. Please don't feel so sad.

Re-apply for fall. I think that they look very favorably on people who really, really want to be there. My son applied ED in high school without a prayer of getting in. He reapplied as a sophomore transfer and had raised his grades considerably as a freshman in college. He got in as a fall transfer. Please don't give up yet.

Disclaimer that I don't know how you actually went about things, so disregard this if it's not anything new for you:

If you do reapply to WashU, remember that they have rolling admissions. Therefore, if you happen to apply for the coming fall term, be sure to submit your application THE DAY they begin accepting applications (January 15th, I believe). I was able to receive a decision by mid-February and, as they had more seats open at that point, I believe it was also easier to gain admission.

I'm sorry lzh. I, too, encourage you to try again for fall or whenever you're ready to present your strongest application (provided that you still qualify for transfer then).

Daniel, my friend loves the Flight of the Concords! I love them too... they're so funny.
