So, What are my chances at an elite university?

Hi, first post here, I'm really glad I found this website, there is a lot of useful information here! : )

I'm a senior, Asian American, and looking to major in business and management, and maybe international studies. I'm looking to apply to:

EA University of Chicago
ED UPenn Wharton
Oxford University

I'm also probably going to apply to most of these schools RD:

I'm afraid that colleges have seen too many students that are "like me", but I do plan to emphasize my leadership in my application.

So, what do you all think? Thanks.

I think your self-evaluation is fairly accurate. You have an impressive resume, but so does everyone who applies to these schools with realistic hopes. My school publishes a report of the stats (No EC's, just raw numbers) of all of the 1000+ seniors from last year, and at the top colleges like the ones you are interested in, sometimes a 4.0 UW/4.7 W 35 ACT was rejected and someone with stats resembling yours or below was admitted, so it is very hard to tell.

Of the "elite" schools, WUSTL seemed to have the highest admit rate, but I have heard they have a liking for my HS, but you would have a decent shot there. You probably will be admitted to at least one "elite" school, but nothing is ever certain. BC is a definate admit though...

half the schools on your list dont offer business and management majors at the undergrad level

May I recommend you apply to 5 other UK univs as well, since it won't cost more? You can find some real gems there that will definitely accept you.

You have 18 schools on your list...cut that down by about half...or at least by 6.

You should actually try and research about the schools and not just pick the top 25 =]

I'm fine if the schools don't have business and management majors, I'm almost certain I'm going to go for a MBA anyway, so getting into the best possible school I can is the priority, I guess.

tetrisfan, any recommendations on other UK universities?

I know my list is a little big, but I've visited many of the colleges on the list and I've been intrigued by all of them. Tufts and BC are my safeties...do you think that's appropiate or should I apply to, say, Rutgers as a back up just in case?

imperial: but so many of the colleges u listed are vastly vastly different.

other than the appeal of their names, i am highly skeptical that u actually like them all because of the academc opportunities and social atmosphere that they offer

BC might be a high match, but Tufts is alow reach. You may have ballpark stats for those schools, but so do mos tpeople who apply. You need to know what a true safety is.

Even though you have excellent credentials and I'm sure you would be successful if you were accepted at these colleges, I'm don't think your application will stand out from all the other qualified applicants. If you love these schools, apply to them, because you can never tell.

You realise that for UK universities you have to apply to study a particular subject? It's not a case of getting in and then choosing a major once you're there (in fact we don't have majors as such).

At Oxford the nearest subject to your interests would probably be Economics and Management. They'd want evidence of good maths skills for the economics side. E&M is one of the most competitive subjects in the university (13% success rate for applicants over the last three years) - I think people see it as a quick route to big money in the City.
