So, what are my chances?

Everytime that I look up something about college, I always get redirected to this website. I've been reading these posts for about a year now, but have never had a reason to post. Now that I've finished my junior year, I want to see what you guys think about my chances of getting into some of the schools I plan to apply to.

First off, I'll just list what schools I plan on applying to next year: Indiana University, Purdue University, Case Western Reserve, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Stanford, UCLA, UPenn, and Washington U in St. Louis. Obviously the first two are safety schools, and since I'm from Indiana they'll be completely free for me. Case Western shouldn't be very hard to get into, and then I think I have some chance of getting into Northwestern, Wash U, and maybe UCLA/Johns Hopkins. And obviously, Columbia and Stanford are always fun to apply to.

So basically I've been an all A student for the past three years. I have a GPA of 4.29. I attend a boarding school in Indiana, and it's pretty challenging. I've talked with some college admissions officers at UChicago and Northwestern and they say that they're familiar with my school and the difficulty of the curriculum, but I don't know how much weight that has in admissions decisions, if any.

My schedule has always been full of honors/AP classes. All my courses this year were (legitimately) college level, and it will be the same next year. Colleges always say they think rigorous secondary school records are very important. Here's what I plan on taking next year: AP Comp, AP Spanish, Amer. Hist II, History of World Religions, AP Chem, AP Phys B, Linear Algebra, AP Calc BC, AP Stats, Intro to Bioethics, and Senior Colloquium. I don't see how I could make this schedule any harder except for adding more classes, which would probably be death at my school.

Scores:

SAT - Math: 740 CR: 710 WR: 700 -- Total: 2150
SAT Bio Test M - 720
Math I/II - 750
AP World Hist - 5
AP Euro Hist - 4
AP Calc AB - 5
AP Bio - 5

Besides just a transcript and test scores, I had a job last summer, and this summer I have an internship with a university professor of chemistry for 9 weeks. I also have an apprenticeship set up for next school year at Eli Lilly, which is a prominent drug development company in the Midwest. I was on the student council for 2 years at my previous school, and this year I was the captain of an Academic Superbowl team. In Science Olympiad I placed 3rd at state for Protein Modeling, and next year I will be the captain of my school's Olympiad team, as well as the captain of the academic team again. I'm also going to work with my biology teacher to set up a biology club, where I'll be president, and I hope for this club to be very active. I volunteer at the hospital right by my school 4 hours every week, and I've also done mission trips around the country with my church. I'm certain I will get great recommendations from my biology/calculus teacher.

I've done as much as I can to impress colleges. I know that essays have a lot of weight in the decision, and I already have quite a few ideas on what I will write about. I also have a great English professor who has taught at Yale, and I'm hoping she would revise my essays and give me advice.

So what do you think my chances are of getting into the schools I plan on applying to? Where should I try and improve? Thanks!

Bumpity bump

Indiana University - You’re in
Purdue University - You’re in
Case Western Reserve - You’re in
Columbia - Match/Reach
Johns Hopkins - Match
Northwestern - Match
Stanford - Reach
UCLA - Likely/Match
UPenn - Reach
Washington U in St. Louis - Match

Everything looks very good, the only thing I would say is your SAT scores could definitely be approved and would be at or below the standards of your top schools

Thanks. I guess I should have edited this list – dropped Columbia, Stanford, and UCLA.

In response to test scores, I’ve taken the SAT twice now and I don’t think my scores will improve much. Maybe 50 points. I just took the ACT this weekend so I might have done pretty good on that. We’ll see!

I actually meant to suggest that. I personally took the SAT twice (like you I felt like I wasnt getting what I should have been getting) and then I took the ACT. I did way better on that. Good luck with your scores!
