So what are my chances?

I have a somewhat good idea of my limitations, but I'd really appreciate your input. My intented major is mechanical engineering, possibly double major or at least minor in history.

White middle class male =/
GPA:
3.72 unweighted / 4.0 weighted
rank 61/670ish (top 10%)
92.1
My grades were mostly A's freshman year, complete crap (B's & C's with one or two As) sophmore year, completely awesome junior year with high A's (95+), and all A's this year. Oh well.

Tests:
SAT just taken, expecting 1400+, will retake in December (hopefully 1500+)
800 US SAT II, taking math (800 expect) and physics (750+ expect) in Nov.
Sophmore APs: 5 Statistics
Junior APs: 5 BC Calc, 5 U.S. History, 4 English Composition

Classes:
All AP or pre-ap when possible. Currently enrolled in AP English, AP Physics, AP Gov/Econ, Calculus III (community college was my only option for math) Contemporary Issues, Choir

ECs:
this is where I suck hardcore
Choir- junior year (mixed & concert), senior (concert)
Boy Scout(9-12)- rank Star
German Club (9-11) Secretary junior year
LDS church seminary (9-11) President junior year (I'm not continuing it because I had a huge faith change).
Cross Country (9)
Track (9)
Wrestling (10)
Orchestra (9)
Guitar(9-12) Combination of lessons and self-teaching

Awards:
Some minor academic ones
AP Scholar

Recommendations:
Expecting one super awesome one and one awesome one

Schools:
University of Texas- Austin I get automatic acceptance to the university because I'm top 10%, but I'm not sure how competetive it is to get into the Mechanical Engineering major.
University of Michigan (both parents alumni)
UCSB
UCLA
UCB
UVa
Rice
and my super reaches
Dartmouth
Columbia
Stanford (dad is alumni)

If you guys could recommend any other schools I'd appreciate it. I'd really like to live in California, NYC, or the Northeast. I'm fine with living elswhere, except I'd like to avoid most of the midwest. I realize these schools are pretty different, but I'm very versatile in my interesets and open to live in many different places.

UCLA and UCB are not going to happen. They only count soph and jr. years. Engineering majors in state need almost perfect grades for those years. I'd say your super reaches are just that.

With the weak soph year and weak ECs, you need matches and safeties unless you want UT.

Heh that's what I figured. I'm fine with UT since it's probably the only one I will be able to afford (barely at that). Do you think Michigan is out of the question? I'm really hoping that having both parents as alumni would give me a little bump that might help make up for my lack of ECs. Would you say that UVa and Rice are also out of the question? I guess I won't apply to UCLA or UCB, but I figure I might as well try and apply to some super reaches and not count on them. As the cheesiest motivation poster says, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

If money is an issue forget the UCs on that basis. There's almost no aid for OOS students. Don't know enough about Michigan to comment. Sure, throw in some applications at super reaches, especially where you're a legacy.

Any imput from anyone on Michigan, Rice, UVa, UT Engineering, and any reccomendations would be appreciated.

"complete crap (B's & C's with one or two As) sophmore year, completely awesome junior year with high A's (95+)" I'm guessing your UM GPA is probably like a 3.6 then. This lowers your chances cause U of M only calculates using your GPA from soph/junior year. Anyways, assuming you have a UM 3.6 GPA:

U of Michigan - Slight Reach / Reach

UVa - Slight Reach
Rice - Slight Reach / Reach

calizoso:

UCB/UCLA: Reach (out of state, Engineering)

So is the general consensus don't apply to UCB/UCLA? I'm not heartset on going to either one and the chances of getting financial at a UC are slim pickins.

Also, would Vanderbilt be a reach?

If any of ya'll could recommend some other schools I'd also really appreciate it.

sorry but bump for advice

If I were to apply to UMich within the next two weeks how would that affect my chances? I could really rush my application and get it in maybe a week from now if needs be.
