So, what are my chances?

I'm a rising senior from Virginia and am interested in applying to UVA, William and Mary, Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown, and American University.

My GPA is 3.9 (unweighted) 4.4 (weighted)
SAT: 2190 (800 CR, 640 Math, 750 Writing)
SAT II: US History 800, Literature 750
I plan to have completed 9 AP courses by the end of my senior year, presumably with 5's/4's on the AP Exams (hopefully...)

EC
Math, Spanish, and English Honor societies
Served on school newspaper
Treasurer of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
Member Model UN (hopefully president/officer next year)
President/Creator of a school political discussion group
Internship with local congressional campaign (fairly involved, 350+ hours over the summer)

I feel like I've got relatively weak EC's, but I think I've got a good chance at getting into most of these schools (except Cornell, Georgetown, and Columbia which I consider fairly big reaches).

So, do I stand a decent shot at most of these schools or am I being over optimistic? If so, what things could I maybe do to beef up my resume?

So I’m guessing no responses means guaranteed admission.

Right?

Anyone?

Particularly interested in chances at William & Mary and UVA

In-state, great chances, though your best bet is to compare yourself to kids from your school that have been accepted in the past.

UVA MATCH
William and Mary MATCH
Cornell HIGH MATCH
Columbia REACH FOR ANYBODY
Georgetown NOTORIOUSLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT
American University SAFETY (you can do better)

I agree with your own assessment. There is no way any ivy is any kind of match for a student with a 640 SAT score.

No doubt 640 is a pretty low score for Ivies, but I’d think that with my strong critical reading and writing scores it wouldn’t necessarily exclude me from a school like Cornell.

You think it’s worth retaking the SAT in order to improve just the math section?

A read through common data sets will show you that a weak CR or math score will indeed exclude the unhooked from all top schools. Here we’re talking about aprox 100 points below average for the school of Arts and Sciences. 30 points below would be a lot.

Thanks, I guess I’ll be retaking the SAT in the fall. I had no idea a poor individual subject could hurt you so badly even when balanced out with good scores.

I’m not sure your poor math section will hurt you so much, especially because the rest of your application looks great. I don’t think your ECs are weak at all! The discussion group sounds really interesting and shows obvious passion, so maybe you could write about it for an essay. I know W&M and UVA will like something like that; you definitely have a good shot at those two (especially W&M because you’re in-state).
