So...what house are we all going to live in?

wise choice...

oh dear..i'm probably in trouble then...as of now (i haven't sent in my form) my top choice is Broadview ... which spells trouble if the cold is so bad as to kill me before i eat all my meals.

Snell 2. Maclean 3. Breckinridge. I mailed the forms yesterday.

The house that appeals most to me is Max P. I hear it's easy to get if you want it, so I'm not rushing anything.

Same with me, mike. I hear it's semi- social and wins at the scav every year.

I might be changing my mind to BJ. It's between BJ and Broadview right now. Another visit will decide.

guys, this I've heard from many MANY informed and independent sources: as far as sociability goes: Max P. Shoreland Pierce are the top 3. B-J is somewhat of a compromise between the eccentric dorms (S-H) and the social ones. Max's location, newness (which some don't like) and individual bathrooms make it the best dorm in my opinion. You can choose to study if you want (quiet if you close the door) or party it up as it is very close to the frats and is super social.

I picked BJ for those same reasons- I like the mix between eccentric and social, and I love the personal space thing of having a single, even if you have to share a bathroom. Plus, hello... Hogwarts. Snell and Max P were my 2nd and 3rd choices.

well, i really liked BJ, but a social life etc. are more important to me. I figure in future years, if I feel like switching BJ is one I'll def switch to (friendly to study with the law library right there too!). Plus, max you get your own bathrooms, a very nice plus. also, its located better than BJ, but BJ is def for me later on

gracello... amazing choices!!!

BJ gives you the nice architecture that Snell also has, the proximity of food that Max enjoys, and the privacy that you can't get anywhere else (if you want it - BJ does have doubles that you can request). Then it has things like BJO which no one else even comes close to having!!!!

If you are looking for the typical college party scene, you will want to be in Max, Pierce or Shoreland. Otherwise, you will be disappointed. I know this girl who was in Breck (switched into Max) and she said that the dorm was dead on a Saturday night.. if you're not looking to party very much or at all, I'd look into Hitchcock..it's the most centrally located dorm, the rooms are really nice, and it's pretty easy to get a single (I think). Oh, and you eat at Bartlett.

I'm very interested physically in Shoreland (ie being somewhat removed from campus and having a view of the lake etc) but I don't think I want the typical college party scene. Can I have that at Shoreland too?

how's broadview? my three choices were 1.broadview 2.b-j 3.i forgot...
is anybody else hoping to go to broadview? :P

i was just like you upromoter. i chose:

broadview

burton-judson

snell-hitchock

broadview looks awesome, and the community is close knit. i think it's far enough from the campus that the wild and crazy parties won't find their way there.

i considered Shoreland for awhile, but didn't want to move out months later.

Woohooo, I'm holding out for Max Palevsky, Wallace House all the way baby!!!

burton judson!! or maclean

...why wallace house?

I'm standing up for Shoreland. I'm a second year and I lived in Shoreland last year, and I'm living there again. I LOVE THE SHORELAND. People always talk about the commute during the winter...blah blah blah... eating at BJ and Pierce.... Blah blah blah.

People who don't live in Shoreland don't know the things that happen in the Shoreland. There will always be a party in someone's room EVERY weekend. Going to The Point, a part of the beach, is one hell of a get away during finals week. People in the Shoreland get out of Hyde park WAYYYY more than any other dorm. There is usually someone in the REC room to play a game of pool or ping-pong with during a study break. We're just relaxed people that balance school and play.

and some other stuff:

When it's cold outside, we wait inside for the bus... duh.

"You'll want to eat at Bartlet....Bartlet has the best food...blah." Alright, this is what happens to the people who eat at Bartlet: they run out of money and they run out of it fast. Bartlet is expensive and you will not- especially athletes- have enough points to last you an entire quarter. You'll find that there is more variety between Pierce and BJ on any given day than at Bartlet. As far as food quality, sure Bartlet will be the best food in the worl for the first week or two. Then, bartlet will start to get boring and tasteless. Well, all of the food on campus gets boring and tasteless, but you'll be eating every day when you live in Shoreland :).

CONGRATS ALL FIRST YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why does everyone look down on Pierce? Okay, so it may look like a prison, but really, it's quite friendly and homelike. Really. People will have you believe the rooms are tiny, but really they're about average college dorm room size. You get used to it, trust me. Also, there are plenty of singles that have not been taken, so you just might be the lucky first year who gets to have a single in Pierce. Consider yourself fortunate.

Also, you know how everyone seems to be so afraid of the Chicago cold and deadly winter? Well guess what guys? Pierce is the only dorm where you do not have to go outside! The dining hall is right down the stairs. You can literally spend days without leaving the building in the winter! It's awesome! (Uh, unless you wanna attend class.)

There's this crazy reputation Pierce seems to have about being a party dorm. Which can be true if you want it to be, but there are definitely plenty of non-partiers there if that's not your cup of tea. You make it what you want. But it does have a great sense of community and people in houses are often really close.

It's also pretty convenient location wise. Close to both gyms, Ratner and Henry Crown, as well as the Reg, and really, not too far from the main quads. Also right next to the 55 bus stop (which takes you to the Green and Red Lines, which take you downtown).

I guess it's too late now to try to convince you all to put Pierce as a choice, but if you do get in, consider yourself lucky. :)

(As far as other dorms go, though, BJ's pretty sweet.)

Pierce is a dorm of love and happiness.... I think it's to overcompensate for its looks... I'm a BJ-er who has spent some time in and around Pierce, and I've thought to myself, "Oh.... THIS is what college is supposed to be like!"

(Not that I don't absolutely adore BJ, because I do, but Pierce has a more down-home happy college-y feel to it).
