Let's be premature.

I like the idea of Shoreland, but don't want the commute.

Which houses are "on" the quad? Are there any?

Let's be premature.

I like the idea of Shoreland, but don't want the commute.

Which houses are "on" the quad? Are there any?

Okay, so I've decided: I want to live in Hitchcock.

I want to live in the Shoreland for its last year. But I'm also liking B-J, Broadview, and Hitchcock.

I'm reading the little booklet now :)

God, I'm so excited, I read the entire booklet but I don't think I caught a single word of it I was so happy. I can't decide which dorm I want. I'm thinking Shoreland too since its only got one year left. Molly, are you the Molly that kept posting on the blog? If so I'm really excited for you that you got in.

i too like the idea of being in shoreland for its last year, but it looks like a hellish commute. especially considering that i have no idea how to survive in a city.

other faves:
Max Palvevsky - it looks oddly attractive
Breckinridge - like the smallness
Snell-Hitchcock - old and pretty, on the quad
Pierce - close to library and athletic center (so maybe i'll be in shape), bay windows, TANSTAAFL

breckenridge doesn't exist. snell-hitchcock is the only one on the quad, and of the two hitchcock is far superior. pierce is for people who couldn't get max. shoreland is sooo far away, i dont understand the appeal. first years dont get the huge rooms you read about (they do get big rooms, but nothing spectacular) and when its 5 degrees outside and windy and youre waiting for the bus after waking up 10 minutes after your spanish oral started, you wont be liking it so much. broadview is also really far away but nice. max, pierce, and snell-hitchcock are the only dorms on campus (b-j is across the midway from any undergraduate activity, although it is technically on campus.)

max is obviously the best. its the closest to bartlett (pick max or hitchcock just to eat at bartlett, honestly) the reg, and reynolds. its also closest to the quads except for snell-hitchcock. its newish and you get private bathrooms and i think its really cool architecture. but honestly its hard to beat the convenience of max.

wow i havent even had time to absorb the fact that i got in. found out at 5 in the morning, one hour later, i'm on my way to school. But i like the sound of shoreland

Broadview (that's my first choice at least, and seeing as I am one of those gap year kids and got my housing form in before any of you all even applied to Chicago, I think I should get it.)

Single room, single bath, nice intimate setting, off campus. My type of place.

Shoreland has that appeal because they always manage to put one nice picture of it in the catalog and the big room think seems to always attract people.... BUT:

Motpasm´s point about waiting for the bus cannot be taken lightly. This year especially, the bus system has faced severe criticism from the students, and it gets REALLY cold in Chicago... to the point that you feel bad for the shoreland kids waiting for the bus. Its kinda depressing, really. Also, since the school is going to sell it, its not really keeping it up as well as it should be, and a lot of kids there do complain about it. So just consider that when thinking Shoreland...

BJ is where its at... lol

ohh quick note...

What you guys are discussing aren´t houses, but dorms. BJ, Max, Snitchcock... all dorms.

Houses are the groups within dorms that you get randomly assigned into, such as Dodd-Mead(BJ), Compton(Shoreland), Vincent(BJ), Rickert(Max), etc..

These will be anywhere from 30-100 kids in size, and it will be kinda like your family on campus. Every house has their own table in their respective dinning hall (harry potter organization style) so that you can always sit with someone you know if you want... Every house also has a Resident Assistant (a fourth-year in the college) and resident heads (usually a grad student couple) in order to build house spirit... it is truly like having a giant family... loads of fun. You also compete in intramural sports as well as go on trips with your house.

The house/dorm thing is confusing because a couple of the dorms are Breckinridge House and Maclean House (they each only have one house, I guess?).

I love the name TANSTAAFL! I can't wait to tell my econ teacher about it.

You're right about Maclean and Breckinridge. They are single-house dorms. The rest are divided into several houses. Max P houses tend to be the largest (60-100) Shoreland are more like 60, and Pierce are less than 50, I think. I think the houses in B-J are on the smaller end, too. You don't get to pick your house, but they are roughly the same size within each dorm.

any opinions on breckinridge? i like the look of it.

how are Maclean and Pierce for a first year who wants a single and is not used to the cold (i.e. closer to the gym/ library the better)?

Pierce is super close to gym and library, but I'm pretty sure you can't get a single as a first year (and the doubles are rather cozy). Maclean is all singles, and it's about four blocks from the gym, five from the library. Pierce has a reputation for being very social (partly due to the tiny rooms which force people into common spaces). Maclean, well, it doesn't have much of a repuation for anything (it's one of the lesser-known dorms).

A couple of notes -- roommates can be a very good thing (occassionally not, but more often than not it's a good experience). And you're going to get cold regardless of where you live (I'm really hoping you don't plan on going nowhere besides the library and the gym for 4-5 months).

I have to disagree... Pierce´s rooms are NOT cozy. They are incredibly small... I did my overnight there and it was claustrophobic. The one thing that does is virtually force the entire house to spend a lot of time in the lounge, so you get a lot of that community feeling... if you are looking for that, then its the place for you. But if privacy is your thing, I´d suggest elsewhere.

Dorms like BJ, Breck, and Maclean will guarantee you singles as a first year... I´d look at those. Out of those, since you have a problem with the cold, BJ is the closest... so I´d look into it.

cozy = euphemism for unbelievably small (Though many people seem to live in Pierce happily).

in that case, i guess it is "cozy"

Hey ------
I chose BJ, Snell-Hitchcock, and Breckinridge. I put BJ first because it has its own dining hall, looks really pretty, is relatively small, and is close to campus. I figured it would be nice to have a dorm with its own dining room if it's really cold out. Also, I definitely want to get a single.
