What'd y'all put down as your top housing choice? Before I actually visisted I thought I was totally settled on Max P, but when I actually visisted I hated it. The colors look gross, and the whole place felt really cold and like there was no real sense of community there--more like a hotel than a dorm. I stayed at Pierce, and I really liked it: everyone seemed to be friends with everyone else and the house did lots of stuff together. So I put that down as my top choice. I also visisted Shoreland, which I thought was really nice but I don't really like the location, so I put that down last. I didn't know what to put for my second, so I randomly chose Maclean, which I'm starting to regret because I know absolutely nothing about it (if anyone knows anythign about it, please enlighten me).

Wanted to room at Shoreland, but jeopardizing my ability to arrive at class promptly due to an unreliable busing service would just be ridiculous. Since I didn't choose Shoreland, seemingly the most social and upbeat dorm facility, I retreated to Shoreland's opposite extreme: a single in Snell-Hitchcock, right on the Quads, full of "insular" students.

i think it takes about 3 minutes from shoreland to class on the bus; 15-20 minutes walking; or 5 minutes riding ya bike. i think its just about one mile.

i just (like 20 minutes ago) got back from u of c, and i stayed in max p, which i really enjoyed. someone said that it seems too sterile; i found it to be comfortable and social. and i think its likely that those who put down max to get put in there; after all, there's the most room for first years.

and for the person who posed the question above, maclean was designed as a mental asylum. what that means is up to your inference.

By all means in you go to Shoreland, ride the bus. There have been muggings (primarily of males) that had become enough of a problem that they have been covered extensively on the Chicago news services.

Why Shoreland? I don't think I'm gonna end up @ UChi, but I stayed in Shoreland and wasn't too impressed. It seemed to be falling apart and rusty and not well taken care of. I probably would choose in this order:
1. Max P
2. B-J
3. Pierce

I'm really hoping for Snell--a single in an old building, but right in the thick of things, central to campus and classes and a good dining hall! Seems like the best of both worlds--my own room and a social life : )

I stayed at Shoreland and HATED it. The place reminded me of a haunted house/dilapidated mansion. The people there were great, though. However, I hated waiting for the bus / walking. Highly inconvenient. Pierce is my top choice by far because they have everything that I'm looking for in a house. (Lots of spirit, unity, plus public restrooms -- meang there are janitors who clean them, not me --, non-smoking, etc. etc.). I've heard lots of good stuff about Max P, and B-J had good food so there you go.

1.Max P or Shoreland (I'm concerned about the state of disrepair in which it's claimed to be...but I like the big rooms and the fact that it's supposedly one of the more social dorms)
2. Max P or Shoreland
3. Pierce

Max P
I cant remember what I put for 2 and 3...I think it was pierce and something else but it doesnt really matter since I'm pretty sure my EA preference and the time I sent it will get me into the mammoth that is Max

Max P (really close to Ratner athletics center, more specifically, the pool)

Snell-Hitchcock (essentially part of the neo-gothic arcchitecture of the rest of the school, actually in the quads, just about)

Breckinridge (couldn't really pick a third choice...this dorm was the only other close to campus that didn't allow smoking)

Hopefully, like Otto, my EA preference will get me into Max P or Snell-Hitchcock

Breckinridge is not close to campus at all. It is a good 10 minute walk to class; 15 to the Ratner. Pierce is on campus and doesn't allow smoking.

Smoking in the dorms is not a big deal, despite certain buildings allowing smoking, even smokers don't smoke in their rooms.

I guess I was just thinking Breckenridge was close in comparison to Shoreland and Broadview, which are a lot farther. Anyway, thanks for the info about smoking, though, I was kind of wondering about that since some of the Max P's allow smoking.

True, although both Shoreland and Broadview offer a bus service, that can get you to class much quicker than walking from Broadview.

No problem. A little more info:

1) Out of the hundres of rooms in Max, only four are designated smoking rooms.
2) No smoking in any interior public areas in any dorm outside of smoking lounges in Shoreland and BJ.
3) For a room to be smoking, all roomates must sign a consent form that must be submitted to housing.
