If you are smart, driven, and have good work ethics, you should be fine as a Northwestern grad. :)

bball, it says "First-Year Students Percent Who Submitted Scores" and beside the fact that the scores aren't that far apart, according to my friend who will be attending UofC next year said that the students report the scores on the survey they have to fill out. It's unfortunate to say, but I for one know a couple of people who lied about their scores so that it "looks" better.

Also, Northwestern and UofC are about the same.. there isn't that much difference except for the fact that Northwestern has a better location. Many of the UofC students I talked to have said that they don't even leave campus without a car for security reasons. However, the neighborhood is changing... slowly.. It seems like prestige really matters to you, but I highly suggest that you personally visit both schools to get the feeling for yourself. UofC is a very uptight place, and to me it's REALLY hard to get around.

All and all you should go where you'll be most comfortable with and from what you've said so far, you seem pretty decided on going to UofC. Good luck!

It seems to me that few people really know Northwestern in the USA. I've talked to some people at American universities and sopme of them hardly knew anything about Northwestern. It's weird that some people in Germany (that's where I live) were like "wooow!" when I told them I am going to Northwestern. That almost made me believe that Northwestern is more prestigious in Europe than it is in the USA. Most people here probably heard of it because of the renowned economics department and Kellogg.
But I don't care, I still think it's a great school and I'm really glad I will attend NU this fall!! It simply surprises me so much...

I think they say that because Cornell is an Ivy League School, whereas, NU is a Big 10 School. NU probably has Ivy Standards (top 12 overall ranking), and might even be ranked higher overall than Cornell.

I personally think more people could identify NU than they could Cornell, personally. Cornell is a very quite school. I bet 90% of the country doesn't even know its in the Ivy League. I honestly didn't until I lived in Upstate NY about 10 years ago. I knew it was a good school, but didn't know much more. I'm sure I'm not alone. After Harvard, Yale, and Princeston...I think most of the Ivy League is kinda out of the spotlight.

Personally, I'd rather go to NU because you get a better overall experience. Chicago is right there, plus you get the great academics, and a pretty solid overall athletic program too. Not to mention...Evanston is a very nice town.

I never went to Cornell, but I heard its a pretty sweet campus. But, NU's campus is pretty awesome too. I've been to quite a few and NU is up there with the nicest I've been to. I did hear that Cornell is nicer from someone whose been to both though, but he said they were pretty close.

some people think hyde park is a reason not to go to u chicago... there are place in evanston that you never want to be in either. i know, i live around here. what i am trying to say is, u wont be in any danger if u go to either school, as long as you stay out of the places that you dont want to be in.

If prestige is one of the main factors towards making a decision, I would say that looking at the US News rankings would be of use. In reality, those rankings mean very little, but many people look at them, so Northwestern being higher than schools like Chicago and Cornell has upped NU's reputation in the past few years. Still, I would recommend visiting the schools, and I would also recommend basing your decision on factors other than reputation, because that can be misleading.

Cornell, Chicago, and Northwestern are equals in my opinion. I would personally choose NU over Chicago in a heartbeat, more fun and an equal reputation is a strong selling point. Unless you want a PhD in econ, NU is the easy choice. I think people on CC focus WAY too much on grad program ranks that have little to do with actual benefits.

Northwestern is /not/ virtually unknown outside of the midwest. I'm from Maryland and Northwestern is /extremely/ well known. The journalism school is widely regarded as one of (if not the) best in the nation. Around here kids see it as a pseudo-Ivy, like Stanford and Duke.

How can a school with a WORLD-RENOWNED business school and arguably the best journalism school be "not known outside of midwest"? If you are one of those that feel it's "unknown outside of midwest", perhaps you've run into too many that aren't knowledgeable and you shouldn't care about what they think anyway.

I've found that more "common" people out here in Northern California have heard of NU than Cornell or UChicago. I grew up here, and I remember hearing about NU since I was a little kid (mainly because of college football). Cornell and UChicago only came to my attention much later.

I just saw the trailer for The Devil Wears Prada, btw, and there is a prominent Northwestern plug in it.

I still think UChicago > NU, though. Trailer plugs not withstanding. :D

When it comes to the laymen or "common folks" as so many like to put it, they know NU not because of Kellogg or its economics department. Rather, its because NU is a Big Ten School.

Right, many laymen recognize Northwestern because of its Big 10 sports programs, which may further contribute to the stuffy, academic reputation of University of Chicago.

Where I live in Massachusetts there is barely anyone who has heard of Northwestern. Whenever I tell people where I am going to college they are like "Oh! You mean Northeastern? In Boston?"

Let's put an end to this. Other than Harvard, every school's reputation varies widely, depending on where you are and whom you are talking to. But those that matter (hiring managers and law school admission officers..etc) would likely know about Northwestern. I never worry about it. Below are some numbers that show! (I will split them into two posts)
