Ranked 21st in WSJ feeder school ranking despite the inherent east coast bias in the ranking (e.g. Kellogg isn't included as one of their top-5 programs and 13 of the top- 15 prof grad programs in the survey are in the east coast)

http://www.lazard.com/Careers/FA-NA-UG.html Northwestern is on the short list of "leading business schools" for lazard's campus recruitment(even though NU doesn't really have an UG biz program).

efg88- That actually really suprises me. When I visited campus (I live in IL), 40% of the people at the information session (there were allot) were from MA and they didnt come together.

I live in Michigan (Detroit area), and nobody has any clue about Northwestern, other than it's a Big 10 school.

I got in to Northwestern engineering last year but I'm just going to Michigan. They are similar in prestige and Michigan is about $25,000 a year cheaper.

dsmo-that definitely is not what i've gotten, haha i'm from birmingham (north of detroit) and northwestern is so huge, i really can't say where i'm going to school without people making a really big deal of it. my friends kind of get sick of it because they're going to michigan and people kind of take that in stride around here.

^ thats funny, because Michigan is really well respected in Chicago (Northwestern is still more respected though) People around here kinda take hearing U of I in stride too, despite the amazing engineering and business schools

northwestern is generally a bit more respected since it's more selective than michigan

northwestern is situated on a beautiful lake, in fact it should fall in it.

i have heard that comment several times about it here on the east coast. it's a crap school.

A crap school? In what way?

northwestern is in no way a crap school...i'd also like an explanation

I live in Ann Arbor and most people think Northwestern is better/more prestigious than UM

Probably in that it's not an ivy.

The joke sounds like typical ivy snobbery. :D

But NU is probably as good as some of the "lower" Ivies. :)

According to the links/stats I posted earlier, NU is probably better than:
1. Cornell, Penn in terms of # of students represented in Yale Law school
2. Cornell in WSJ feeder ranking
3. Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn in terms of number of undergrad alums who are now Fortune 500 CEOs
4. Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth in terms of being selected as target school by Lazard.

I'll be attending Northwestern...and you know what? I don't care about the rep! I don't care if it's the best school in the world, or the worst. All I know is that it caters to all of my talents and aspirations, and that's what I want in a school. What kills me about collegeconfidential is that so many people r so focused on getting into these hardcore schools...with only simple justifications like "ohh...great business program...ohhhh it's got a great rep...it's number 1 in the country." Who the hell cares?! Success is going to be what YOU make of it. A college is only there to supply you with basic skills. I'd hire an intelligent, hard-working community college student over a social moron Harvard grad ANY DAY. Thank you very much. :)

...bravo...

im from ivy country, and im going to NU next year, and from what I can tell, Northwestern is given a little less credit than every ivy among the general population, but among those who matter, it regarded as equal to middle of the pack ivies. Of course, every once in a while you'll run into someone who says "you're going to Northwestern, awesome, im going to northeastern." Thats just how it is

I love Northwestern...and it sounds like dontcareforthis will too...it's an amazing school, no matter what Ivy-obsessed people say...

haha YES...I am absolutely obsessed with Northwestern...and for all the right reasons! But what people don't understand is that I could be just as obsessed with a school of "lower rank," and still have an amazing 4 years!

I've got Northwestern right up there with Ivies on my list of choice schools. I agree that it's about how the school will cater to you and what you want to do...Sure, a good reputation is great, but I've read through this entire thread and that seems to be one of the biggest concerns! ...And that's just ridiculous to me. Who cares if kids in Kentucky or kids in Germany know about your college as long as it's home for you?

im not an ivy snob! for the record, my college list: only 2 ivies, yale and penn. (Other schools are Uchicago, unc, duke, stanford, wellesley.) So enough of that. i'm sorry I called it a crap school...without explaining why.

the teaching and class quality varies a lot, and is often mediocre. of course, no school offers perfect teachers and classes across the board, but northwestern certainly isn't stellar in this regard. so don't expect marvelous teaching. also, it's on the quarter system. it's much harder to get a good GPA at nwestern. i don't want a crappy GPA.
social life is decent, again not stellar. 40% greek. make of that what you will--i personally am not in favor of joining a greek organization. so my northwestern social experience => not stellar.

my gripes have ZERO to do with reputation. i'd choose my state school, unc, over northwestern in a blink of an eye. anyway, if there's one good thing about northwestern, it's the good reputation it has. i'm the first to acknowledge that a diploma from nwestern helps your employment prospects.

Then why are you applying to UChicago?
