So what is the best class you took at Brown?

Could current students respond to some of the best classes/profs they have taken at Brown? And why were they so good?

UC170-- Transformations of the Research University. Excellent prof, excellent readings, puts the whole university and your experience in context and forces you to really be critical about the institution and of your own education process.

CH114/115 with Professor Stratt–unbelievable instructor. I use concepts from this class all the time in every day life. This class made all of calculus worth it (even though I liked calc).

CH145 w/ Basu-- learned the most I did in any semester about chem.

ED106 with Marty West (though he’s gone)-- best overview, in my mind, of the American education system-- history, politics, policy, and reform.

LR11: Fiction – taught me more about all forms of writing than I would have thought possible.

Grabbed one or two classes from each year here just as a quick look.

A few favorites –

POLS1010 (The Fourteenth Amendment) w/Prof. Cahill (visiting Roger Williams Law professor)

HIST1030 (Early Medieval Europe) w/Prof. Remensnyder – made my 8:30 AM class something I looked forward to. 'Nuff said.

HIST1790 (N. American Environmental History) w/Jacoby

POLS1030 (Modern Political Thought) w/brettschneider – most participation I’ve ever had in a lecture

BIOL0200 (Intro Bio) w/Miller – Fantastic professor for an intro class

I’ve heard great things about Miller, though I haven’t taken any biology classes.

For me, it’s got to be:

CSCI0310 (Introduction to Computer Systems) with Pascal van Hentenryck. He was very entertaining, lively, and he was able to explain the fairly abstract concepts well; the course was reasonable and fair, and his online lecture slides (although likely unintelligible if one didn’t attend class - but everyone did on a regular basis) were useful as a refresher if one needed it. The material probably wouldn’t be too interesting to anyone who doesn’t have a decent programming background, sadly.

GRMN0100/GRMN0200 with Prof. Jane Sokolosky (aka Frau Sok). Frau Sok is possibly the best language teacher I’ve had, and within 1 year of study, I had learned quite a bit of German (most of the grammar, about 4000 words of active vocabulary) and become comfortable speaking it with the class (no small feat for someone who is quiet in classes and had never before studied a spoken language). It’s a good amount of work, but her tests aren’t designed to trip you up, just to make sure you understand the concepts, grammar, and vocabulary. I recommend anyone considering starting a new language to try her section of intro German.

I’ve also had good experiences with Prof. DeBrohun and Prof. Stratis Papaioannou in the Classics department, although the courses I’ve taken with them weren’t necessarily geared towards my areas of interest in Latin and Greek. Both are readily available outside of class to answer questions, are supportive, good at providing interesting, relevant information, and able to challenge everyone without overwhelming those with lesser backgrounds.

This one looks like fun:

I enjoyed

Color me Cool (graphic novels)
Culture and Health
Drawing (with Ansel)
Mosaics
Creative Nonfiction (with Schapira)
Anything with Gonsher
RISD courses (Pottery)

I did not enjoy:

Intro to History of Art and Architecture (with Muller)
Psychology of Race, Class, and Gender
Feminist Theory

@ wolfmanjack
I was in that battle… but not as a part of the class. it was just fun haha

GNSS0090c- Reproductive Health: Science and Politics (first year seminar). Great class for talking about recent issues, with not TOO much work. A great 5th class or 4th with orgo haha
HIST0970b- Tropical Delights: Imagining the History and Culture of Brazil (also a FYS)

Really, I would recommend taking at least one first year seminar. I took 2, and both were fantastic.

ECON0110 w/Serrano- i personally enjoyed the course, i feel like i learned a ton and it was interesting. as a (current) human bio concentrator, it was great to get a taste of a completely unrelated field. Ive decided that if i do not go premed, ill be an economics concentrator :)

I agree with the recommendation of German 100/200. I took that this year (although I was not in the section taught by Frau Sok), and it has been the most fun thing I’ve done at Brown! I really think every first-year should shop an intro language class… and chances are, after you shop it, you’ll be hooked!

I also loved BIOL0500 (Cell & Molecular Biology). Heywood is a wonderful professor.

I’ve also heard great things about Neumann’s History of Art & Architecture classes.

Each term, one of the grad student instructors has taught one of my German lectures while Frau Sok has been at conferences, and while it’s taught a bit differently, I haven’t had any problems with them as teachers either, so I’d recommend the class even if you can’t get into her section. Any language class would be enjoyable so long as you’re willing to put in the requisite time (German is only 4 hours of class a week, but most are 6 a week)

CS 17 with Greenwald pulled me into the department. I don’t know how it’ll be with Claire Kenyon, but considering the material stays pretty constant, and we TAs will do a lot to make sure the class is run well, the class should be pretty good.
Phys 7 with Valles is an amazing class, and he’s got to be the most caring teacher I’ve had since maybe elementary school. Even though the course material pushed me away from Physics, it’s an amazing class and you will be proud of finishing this course.

Claire is an amazing teacher. She’s not Pascal, but I really enjoyed CS157 with her.
