Would any current or recent students mind telling what life is like at Vassar? What is the student body like? What do people do on weekends? What are the best/worst things about going to school there?

artsy and beautiful.

Hey there... I'm a current sophomore (girl).

Overall, I would say that the student body is quite mixed. There are "Vassar hipsters" and "Vassar art majors" (two of the more popular stereotypes I've heard made about the student body), but plenty of "Vassar athletes" and "Vassar biochemistry majors" to go along with them. Basically, there's no one way to describe the student body because it's made up of students with so many different interests. The diversity of clubs (over 100), majors (over 50), events, and other opportunities offered on campus really speaks to this.

What I've written about could also be used to answer your second question about weekend life.... people do all sorts of things. Some choose to spend a good deal of their time doing homework, others like to party, others to watch movies or play board games, others to spend some time on student club activities, others to take a trip into New York City, and still others to attend publicly sponsored campus events. These events include everything from lectures to dances to shows of one type or another and vary hugely. This weekend for example the following activities (open to everyone) took place:

[ul][]A student art sale (daytime on Friday).
[]A filmscreening luncheon and discussion on the biography of Bayard Rustin, a civil rights activist, which was sponsored by two campus clubs (Friday afternoon).
[]A South Asian dinner with food cooked by students and local Poughkeepsie restaurants (Friday evening)
[]A theatrical performance by the Experimental Theater of Vassar College (Friday & Saturday evenings).
[]Three different comedy shows put on by different student groups (Friday & Saturday evenings)
[]A concert/dance with several student DJs as well as a Canadian group called Thunderheist (Friday evening)
[]Several senior recitals on harp and violin (Saturday afternoon)
[]A performance by the Vassar College Orchestra (Saturday night)
[] Mr. Vassar, an annual comedic performance/farce in which eight Vassar students compete to be crowned "Mr. Vassar" (Saturday night)
[]A dance performance by one of the campus dance groups at the Bardavon Opera House, off-campus (Saturday night & Sunday afternoon)
[]A dance in the Mug (on-campus "club") sponsored by the Council of Black Seniors (Saturday night)
[]Intramural sports games (Sunday afternoon)
[li]A visiting choir performance (Sunday afternoon)[/ul]
[/li]

There are also usually several sports games taking place; however, I believe we're now between seasons, so there were no home games this weekend.

Lastly... some of the best things about Vassar include the lack of requirements (no core curriculum), the high level of discourse in classes, the kindness and excellence of the vast majority of the professors, the people (I've made some truly wonderful friends), and the attractiveness of the campus. As for negatives... well, Poughkeepsie isn't all that exciting, so if you're looking to be right in the middle of a bustling city, it's probably not your best choice. Also, as someone who came from a relatively sports-centered high school, I sometimes find myself missing the school spirit associated with sports games. We have varsity sports here, of course, it's just that they're not usually the most talked about things on-campus.

Go to *****.com and read about vassar, including student testaments

What's *****.com?

u n i g o maybe?

yeah... thats it... i didn't know they blocked it... i guess they're rivals!

That's so funny how CC censors u-n-i-g-o. Kinda 1984-esque. And it's not even like the two sites serve the same purpose!

google.com

hahaha yeah, definitely something again uni go. (z), perhaps big brother really is watching..
