So who else is getting ZERO financial aid...

all i'm saying is that if your parents are making that much money they could have easily put away 3-5k a year for 8 years towards your education

WHat if the parents are immigrants who only began to make this kind of money recently and can't even afford to buy housing. They have no savings, or even are in debt.

^^ werd....we came here 8 years ago and my parents started with much lower income than what we have now so savings was out of the question...blanket statements don't really help...

Instead of gross income they should give financial aid based on net income...if they did that I would be gettin fin aid right now...they should also take into account that expenses in CA is totally different from somebody who lived in say Arizona...for a two bedroom apartment where I live 1400 is the minimum....I used to live in KY and a three bedroom there barely crossed 750...however, financial aid is calculated the same regardless of location

yes, but you must also remember that the expenses and cost of living of a particular area are closely related to salary...

For example, someone living in NYC will pay more for housing, but they also have a much better chance of making a better salary than someone with a similar job title somewhere in the south. You can move to the south and decide to pay less...but it's usually at the expense of an inferior job salary.

I have a feeling this is why the financial aid is calculated the same regardless of where you live.

j/m/o

that increase is very meager....well I shouldn't generalize....but as far as I know the increase in my father's salary after moving from KY to CA has been 2-3K

a number of factors come into play here... is he still working for the same company he was in KY? Or is he starting out as a new employee working for a different company?

Did you guys do the fafsa yourselves?

different company...my father told me that COLA (Cost-of-living Adjustment), which was used to compensate for the location factor, has been reduced significantaly in the recent years by many corporations...

well that explains why...your father is actually lucky he made 2-3k more than he previously was... usually people end up taking a significant pay cut when they move between companies since they have no seniority at their new job.

actually those are just normal salary raises over the years...I think he moved on the same salary

like i said, it takes time to move up within a new company...hes lucky... many people take pay cuts when they bounce between jobs.

money aint a thang

i got the official notice today in the mail that i didnt qualify for Cal Grant A or B... my mom will be laid off in a few months too, but when filling out the fafsa forms, it's based on past year. so according to that, they made "enough" to not qualify for financial aid.. oh well, that's life.

i'll be doing the whole student loans deal.

i totally agree with citan, 100k here isnt worth 100k in arizona. the cost of living is just so high, so of course, wages inflate to compensate. It doesn't mean since my parents are making 100k, I'm swimming in money and getting everything I would like. Quite the opposite actually.

well, last time I checked, financial aid doesn't cover the non-resident fee... I wonder how much loan they would let out... I work part-time for two years but still can't save up that much for one year...

plz...plz... just consider me as a CA resident.... I've never been to other states and have been here since 01...
btw, they say it costs more to live in LA and SD than the bay area, is that true?!

me too. but my dad forgot to mail in the fafsa but its all good i guess. I mean I doubt we would have qualified for finaid since we are uppermiddle class. going to a cc for two years also helped save a whole lot of money.

maybe LA is more expensive in some areas than the bay, but their are both very expensive places to live. i dont know about SD though.

CC saved me a ****load of money...but I still gotta take loans...hello debt

Yea CC saved my parents a load of money so I think they will pay for my last 2-3 years. Parents told me not to apply for FAFSA, said we wouldn't qualify and it would be a waste of time.

Mr. Sparkle: yea I told my parents to not apply for FAFSA because we did it in HS and didn't get ****...but they still wanted to do it. I guess they were hoping for a miracle or something....sigh

Even if my parents pay, I feel kind of bad since they are using up money that could saved up for their retirement. Does anyone know any low interest bearing loans that don't have to be repaid immediately after you graduate (job market is always an uncertainty)?
