I’m applying EA, OOS. SAT scores are great, gpa is meh, but good enough. Since my school isn’t Morehead-nominating, I am praying that I qualify to apply for the scholarship via admissions referral.

@deeds1:

You are correct; UNC’s out of state population is limited by the general assembly to 18 percent.

Although there are no specific county quotas, it is a lot easier for a smart person to get into Chapel Hill from an economically disadvantaged county, like Franklin county, vs a well-funded, popular county, like Wake county. Intra-county and even intra-school competition within Wake County is very high.

I applied EA! I can’t wait for the results. I’m in-state. SAT’s in the top 25%, GPA lower than average, lots o’ extracurriculars, good essays/recs… but I’m really nervous!

^Good luck!

I find it funny that for a lot of people who are OOS, it’s easier to get into Duke than to get into Chapel Hill. Being in-state is also really good if you’re applying to Duke since they are required to have around ~16% of their class from the Carolinas.

Harambee - Question here. Duke is required to have about 16% from North Carolina or from North and South Carolina. I have never heard this before. Do you have a link where I can read about this?

I’ve applied there as well. 1870 SAT/27 ACT, 3.5(W)GPA, good extracircullars, good recs and all, not to mention top 15% of my class. I wish so many people from my school didn’t apply there lol.

@DebateMom - Duke “traditionally” has 15% of it’s class be composed of students from either North or South Carolina. A Duke admissions representative came to our school and told us that the founder of the university wanted Duke to give back to the local region. At the time, the South wasn’t exactly the best place out there in terms of education so the founder saw fit that Duke have good chunk of it’s students be from the surrounding area.

Hey guys, question.
I applied OOS, but my school has never had someone apply to UNC before. Will I still be considered for referal by the admissions committee for the Morehead scholarship???

^From the Morehead-Cain website:

I applied EA, but I’m from out of state, so I hear it’s a LOT more competitive. UNC is my top choice. Anyone mind chancing me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/802006-what-my-chances-getting-into-unc.html

So UNC reserves 72% for in-state, but number-wise, how many OOS students do they take annually???

My S applied EA. OOS, excellent ACT, gpa not as strong (3.7 weighted). He figures he doesn’t really have a chance, but he didn’t let that stop him from trying. He has other great options, so we’ll just wait & see.

UNC reserves 82% for instate not 72%, and they count full-ride OSS athletes as in-state.

As the Tonyballioni said, UNC has at least 82% of it’s class as in-state students, but OOS athletes are counted as in-state. The actual number of OOS students for UNC’s last class was 2,500 (16%). The actual number of OOS maybe closer to 3,000 since OOS athletes are counted as in-state.

In stater. 31 ACT 3.4 unweighted // ~3.65 weighted (New England prep school GPA is killing me!)

Applied EA~

In addition to OOS athletes, those OOS students on full ride scholarships, Morehead, Robertson, Carolina, Pogue, Colonel Robinson are not counted in the OOS number.

I don’t see the Davie Scholarship mentioned on the FA/Scholarship pages so it must have been eliminated. If anyone has any more info on this it would be a good thing to post.

BTW, I don’t think that OOS athletes would raise the number by 500; maybe 150-225 max but that’s about it. The football team would have the highest number and it can only have 85 TOTAL players on scholarship and it is not approaching that number of OOS players.

i applied EA. in state. 4.3 gpa. 1880 sat/28 act. excellent essays. solid ECs.
I’m kind of nervous…especially with everyone with better SATs…

Last year D was accepted EA-1409/6517 OOS EA applicants (22%). Strong SAT, 3.87 WGPA. 3 AP completed 4 more scheduled.
Unique essay and it was obvious we were full pay.

just a question did anybody hear anything from the university yet?

I haven’t heard anything. Nor do I expect to until the end of January.
