Hello! So who is excited about going off to Caltech? (For the record, I have not made my own decision):

But these are the final considerations for me:
Is Caltech a closed campus (something sort of on the terms of Princeton, for example, in terms of how easily a random hobo could walk in)? Is safety an issue?

Caltech is not a closed campus. It is, however, exceptionally safe. I have never seen a “random hobo” on campus grounds. Mostly you see rich soccer moms jogging with their kids in those weird racing strollers.

Seeker99: You are running short of time, but you are lucky in the sense that Caltech does not require a deposit (some schools require it to be mailed in, so you need to make a decision a few days before). So you still have a few hours.

When we visited, we saw lots of the public wandering through. People introducing their kids to the turtles in the turtle pond, people walking their dogs… It was lovely.

My son clicked on that “Accept” button couple of weeks ago, is that all one need to do to accept? there is no need for deposit or formal action to take, am I correct? I just hope he did not miss anything before actual enrollment.

BTW, safety is also our top concern too since my son is probably younger than other students b/c he skipped a grade, glad to know it’s a safe campus.

Are there fast food restaurants or other budget restaurant ($6-7) in walking distance for meal choices? Do Techers go there often? I was asking the question during a parent webinar but did not get answer. I wish my son and I could go to the PreFrosh weekend but we are far away from LA(east coast).

In walking distance there is: Corner Bakery, Chipotle, Panda Express, Subway, Noah’s Bagels, Jack in the Box, Carls Jr. and plenty of other nicer/more expensive places like sushi restaurants, burger places, and Thai restaurants. Techers go to all of these places quite often, as there is no board plan on the weekends and they have to find their own food then.

P.S. There are a lot of students here who have skipped a grade or are one year younger. I believe in the current freshman class there are two people who were 16 (two years younger).

Thanks for all the information, this is very helpful.

16 years old in college? Amazing! You guys make me feel so old, i’ll be 21 when i enroll as i have to serve in my country’s military for 2 years! XD

nerdyDad: Clicking on the accept button is all you need to do. Your son will get a confirmation in the mail soon.

My God 16-year-old college students!! I HATE MYSELF&I SUCK&I STINK…

dawncoming: Don’t worry, that post makes you sound JUST like a 16 year old! :P

I hope you mean Einstein’s 16. That makes me feel better. Otherwise…you understand what people do when they get excited…I was teased! ahh! :(
