what the title said... lol how come [some] people ON the mailling list [assuming they got stuff from them before] not get any catalogs n such now, as oppose to people who havent even applied ED ... just wondering

I don't know.

As far as I've seen, place8726 is the only member who recently received a catalog without an application pending. He may be the exception, not the rule.

I know they give out catalogs like candy at the admissions events, but going through the trouble to mail out that big book may have some substance behind it.

My friend who got in ILR as a transfer last year received one prior to his admission decision. I think it may be some kind of unoffical likely letter -- perhaps saying they've reviewed your application and you look good, but if the tail end up applicants is superb you're not in.

Sending out catalogs has a practical purpose for applicants who have a fair shot of making it because they can begin to plan thier courses of study. In my case, I'll need to register for classes just a couple weeks after acceptance and having the catalog here sure has made it easier for planning my spring.

This is not to say that if you didn't receive a catalog you didn't make it -- your application may be toward the end. Again, I just cant see them sending out course catalogs to ALL applicants. There's no rational reason to do that, and to receive one and then not get in certainly involves a certain degree of cruelty.

your title is a double negative, so i was like if you're not on the mailing list then obviously you're not getting stuff.

Journey495, thanks for your consoling comments, you have just made the majority of the applicants who have not recieved a catalog feel especialy bad.

The only thing that I have gotten, before I even sent in my application that is, is a booklet that has the common app and supplement in a cornell brochure that you can tear out.

Yes that is what I have, but aparently, Cornell felt like sending catalogs to the best students, implying that those that have not recieved the catalog are not so great after all. Wierd, never heard anything like that. Would anyone care to call Cornell and ask them about the catalog thing?

I got a catalog and I haven't applied yet! ;)

journey, i'm in the same boat as you. i recieved a catalog over a week ago and i'm a spring transfer applicant. i was wondering if it did mean something because as you said, its a huuuuuge book. it must be quite a hassle to ship those things out. is the unofficial likely letter theory possible?

There is a similarity between journey's post and ajp87's post.

Journey's friend who got the catalog was a transfer and ajp was also a transfer. I think it may be for transfer applicants because there is far less number of people for transfer applicants than freshman applicants. And since you guys are transfer, you already kinda know what you want to major in.....

that's just my opinion...

That was not my intention. Just because they got through some applications doesn't mean they got through them all. That's all I'm saying.

You have to admit that it's kind of weird to send out course catalogs to every applicant just for the heck of it...

ok,, a random post ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

but i got one from u of chicago and i havent even applied yet..
i'm just on their mailing list..

so i don't think it matters at all......................................................

That's a very good point. Did transfer applicant NOT receive a catalog?

and im ED to CAS

I REALLY WANT SOMEBODY FROM CORNELL TO PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION!!! because the only thing anyone else can do is guess positively or negatively =(

** i meant why do people on the mailing list not get stuff.. but im sure most of you got what i meant =)

Same here. I'm ED to Humec though.

If you're referring to the catalog of all the courses at Cornell (which is a huge book), I got that, and although I applied ED to AEM, I HIGHLY doubt that it is a likely letter, given my stats

Plus their application status website still says they haven't received one of my recommendations..soo

I got the catalog, and they said they will give me wayy before I submitted my app. In fact, Cornell said in a letter back in Oct that it will send me the catalog. (check your mails guys (actuallu read them), although I don't do it that much either.) lol I did it only because Cornell was my first choice.

i didn't get a catalogue...starting to worry now.

I wouldnt worry. People who haven't even SENT in applications have recieved this thing.
