So You Got Into UMD - What Next?

Hey new Terps! Congratulations on your acceptance to UMD. Here's a few pointers for prepping for your four-year journey:

Concrete Things To Do

1) Get ready for the dorms - Get a shower basket thing for putting your shampoo/conditioner into when you use the dorm showers.
2) Bring extra towels. Swimming, gym, dropped your current one in the shower or on the floor, whatever - having a spare helps.
3) Bring your instrument - it really brings people together in the dorms.
4) Get a laptop if you don't have one already - you'll use it more than you think.
5) GET A small, nonheavy PRINTER. THIS IS A LIFESAVER. The 40lb laser printer is difficult to move in/out as well as takes up a lot of room.
6) Download The UMD Campus Map App to find your way around campus! It's the best, most up to date map of UMD in existence so snag it now while you remember :)
7) Leave your dorm room door open. You'll make SO many friends this way, and four years later I'm still in touch with most of them.

Abstract Things To Do

8) Get involved in activities early. The key events are the "First Look Fair" and "Maryland Day". Trust me, you'll know when these are coming -- just don't skip them when you hear about it.
9) Be a leader, not just a participant => "Leader of ___ club" is significantly better in looking for jobs than "Participated in ___ club". Sooo, what's the best way to be the leader of a club? Participate EARLY. As a senior, I've seen the mantle of club leadership passed down to those who have been the most active, for the longest period of time.

Have a blast at UMD! I know I did, and once again congratulations on getting in :)

Did you make the UMD map app?

Tried to view the UMD map but looks like its an app. Will have to try another way to view on my PC!

AnonymousBoy - Indeed! In my sophomore year :)

dowzerw - yes it’s currently an iOS and Android app, I’m working on turning it into a web app. Sorry for the inconvenience (I’m just one guy making and maintaining both versions of the app! :D) and hope to have a web version for you soon. One alternative for full-computer browsing is terpnav.umd.edu, and another is www.transportation.umd.edu/parking/maps/map_campus.pdf but they won’t render very well on phones.

The app great and very helpful. Congrats and thanks on the app!

Pretty awesome looking app there!
