So you've been suspended from a good school, what now?

Well ive been suspended due to a plagiarism issue that was further complicated to already being on social probation for kicking a vending machine (wont go into much detail about that, just know its as stupid as it sounds). as a result, i just got the word today that Ive been suspended until 2011. what to do now? being suspended from a good school, even though i hated it

i was just going to ask a similar question! I’m in the same boat! I got suspended for disorderly conduct in the dorms for allegedly banging on walls (I did not, I knocked on the door!) and being disruptive. They also thought I was drunk or smoking something and I was not! Since I had some prior violations last year in class, I’ve been suspended until September 2010. You said 2011, so you can’t come back till January?

Anyways, I’m thinking about getting a job to make some money. This sucks because I’m like a year behind. I’m a sophomore and am still going to be a sophomore next year.

Also I have to get mental health treatment for 6 months in order to get back. i got a little stressed maybe but I don’t have mental issues!

Are your parents mad? Mine are giving me such attitude. This wasn’t my fault my stupid suitemates complained for no reason about me.

Anyways good luck and you’re not alone here! Do you have any conditions or things to do in order to get reinstated?

I’m happy that I’m not the only idiot for getting suspended. Haha.

I am sorry, but look at the bright side - now you have more time to reflect on what you want to major in ;)

Change your behavior so you don’t get suspended again.

sparkleyshine: What school do you go to?

DePaul University. Why? Where do you go?

Go get a job somewhere. It won’t be easy and you’ll probably be working for minimum wage. Or you could take classes at a community college that’ll transfer.

Yep I’m definitely thinking about working and possibly taking some community college classes in summer since it’s too late now as the semester already started! So I think these are all great ideas. Unless you have the money to go travel the world!

Actually, my parents are really supportive since they think the entire thing is stupid on the schools part to go that far over plagiarism. Nahh im suspended until Fall 2011 (too much but w/e)

Im actually very healthy, however, when i kicked the vending machine, the school made it out like i was going to hurt someone because i kicked a machine, even after i explained that i had paid for my thing and couldnt get it out.

but anyway yes Im considering my options. im seeing this as freedom from the stresses from this school that im at. I might go to community college and work or just do one or the other. either way, im fine and my parents are fine, actually supportive since ive been thinking about doing something like this for a long time.

No actually it’s perfectly acceptable to go this far over plagiarism. As many times as they ram “plagiarism is bad” down your throat in high school and college the fact that you didn’t figure it up, and still haven’t figured it out, is telling. You also have serious anger issues if you’re destroying a vending machine because it didn’t give you your dollar worth of junk food. This is probably your last chance to get yourself sorted out before it makes a gigantic impact on your life, but with your parents enabling your behavior that seems unlikely.

I have to agree with chuy here.

Plagiarism, no matter how small, is regarded by our society as anathema. Thus, your suspension from your university is not completely unfair - haven’t they rammed it into your head about how bad cheating is? I suppose that you have been given plenty of advance warning on the consequences.

And kicking a vending machine - it happens, but still, did it have to go that far?

It seems to me that you are quite an impulsive person. Excessive impulsivity, to either cheat or kick a vending machine, is not a good way to conduct life.

"Actually, my parents are really supportive since they think the entire thing is stupid on the schools part to go that far over plagiarism. "

? Outside of a crime like murder or rape, plagiarism is the worst crime that a student can commit, and goes to the heart of violating what a school stands for. IMO you are lucky that you weren’t permanently kicked out.

Just because the school calls an incident plagirism doesn’t mean it actually was.
It’s not always as black and white as some like to believe.
There are cases when the school calls some BS foul over something trivial.

He never said he didn’t plagiarize, he just said the school went too far over it. I’m guessing if he disagreed with having what he did labeled as plagiarism he would have mentioned it.

Seriously man, why the f did you cheat?

@chuy
The vending machine wasnt destroyed at all. just kicked once, and that was because I had paid for my food and didnt get it since it was stuck. so i supposed that means im automatically going to go kill someone because kicking a vending machine once means that i have serious rage issues…riiiight

I actually maintain that I didnt plagiarize since it is a lab report. what they’re saying that ive done is copied someone’s lab report verbatum 100%, however, the website only said 40% which indicates that I couldnt have done it word for word. the killing part is that its mainly because the conclusions are the same (which they are for everyone’s report) just different numbers and crap like that. If that were true, the everyone would be plagiarizing. now i will admit that i merely paraphrased certain parts of another report since the professor wouldnt answer any of my questions, but to go as far as to say that I just put my name on someone else’s previous report and turned it in is just wierd and thus why i feel its too severe.

“now i will admit that i merely paraphrased certain parts of another report since the professor wouldnt answer any of my questions”

Doing that without referencing the other report is called “plagiarism,” and the university was right to take your actions very seriously.

Is that what they said? In that case, that’s irrational. I would recommend punishing them by going back to college / getting a job, working hard, and humiliating them by becoming a hugely successful person.

Oh, and I’m sorry, but what you did is still considered plagiarism. It doesn’t have to be word-for-word.

I’m really sorry kid. The vending machine issue sounds super dumb and the plagiarism thing, while wrong, is unfortunate. The best thing to do is to stay at that school as opposed to transferring because other schools won’t take kindly to your suspension. Can you take classes at a local CC or college to get some transfer credit for next year? If not, I would take this time to work, make some money, travel a bit if the situation allows, have some fun, and improve yourself (whatever that may mean to you). It seems like you’re a bit disillusioned (I saw your other posts) so take this time to figure stuff out.

Yea its ok. I guess as of right now its going through the appeal process and we’re waiting. I figure that if it doesnt work out then ill will just go to community college and take classes and try to transfer to a state school. Besides, I had been thinking about taking a year off anyway so i guess this is the nudge that I needed. Also, i would be at community college, which probably wont be as stressful as this one that im at (hopefully). and Id be near home so i could get a decent job (good paying jobs i gave up to do to this school). So its not really the end, more so… (sorry i dont have a good analogy or metahopr)
