At SOAR did they explain how priority registrations work? As I understand it, a new freshman gets 3 priority registrations. They can use the first one in their 4th enrollment term (Fall of 2011 for the new class starting this Fall). Is the purpose of a priorty to allow a student to jump ahead in the queue during their in the registration sequence? For example, if they were in the last priority registration group for a quarter they could use one of their 3 priorities and jump to the top?

They didn’t explain this to parents at all, but hopefully to the students. I will ask my son about it. I am curious too.

Mariner116^ My son did not meet with his own assigned advisor and he was not given a name of him/her yet either. I believe it will be on their Portal at some point. Even after SOAR there are still unanswered questions!
SanDiego2010^Thanks for the tip on Campus Express. My son may need more $ for his food plan. I will wait and see.

Mariner116^ No mention of priority reg. here either, accept some talk that the freshman block scheduling is priority.

Looks like there is a special time period, if you want to use a priority:

General info. from registration website regarding priority registration:

PRIORITY REGISTRATION: Undergraduate students are eligible to choose a total of three terms of Priority Registration during their career at Cal Poly. First-time freshmen are eligible to use a term of Priority Registration for their fourth term of enrollment. Transfer students are eligible to use a priority for their second term of enrollment. As only three terms of Priority Registration are allowed, students are cautioned to plan accordingly. Any qualified student may select Priority Registration simply by using web registration ~ CPReg ~ during the appropriate alpha rotation within the designated PRIORITY REGISTRATION time period (See the current appointment schedule to view this information). You will be asked to confirm the use of a priority.

Selection of Priority Registration
If you are qualified, use CPReg during the PRIORITY AND POST-GRAD STUDENTS registration period. (Check this link for your alpha category Registration Rotations ). If using PRIORITY REGISTRATION for this term, you must request it during the Priority Registration time. CPReg will prompt you to verify your intent to use one of your priorities.

NOTE: Once you have selected priority registration for a term, it is NOT possible to reverse your request, so be sure that the courses you want are available and open before using a priority.

All students eligible for PRIORITY REGISTRATION have three terms available to use.

So, like you said fourth term of enrollment.

QUESTION I would have as a student is does the number of credits accumlated, ie. above 45 credits earned (sophomore status) bec. of AP and CC, accelerate the the time you can first use your priortiy? They really need to get started and then talk with their advisor to see what courses are extremely difficult to get as it relates to their rotation number in any given term.

Sorry for the long post. I love the internet…prob. why I’m @ this forum…so much you can find out. The kids really have so much available at their fingertips. I remember waiting for hours “in a line”, rather than “online” to get courses for college, don’t even remember having an advisor…

^^Not an expert on this or anything, but I think they truly mean 4 terms at cal poly.

Does priority registration apply to one class, or as many as you pick? Do you get a date to pick classes before everyone else, or just you can get in to classes automatically? Confusing!

First-time freshmen are first eligible to use a Priority Registration for their 4th term of enrollment (sophomore fall term) And you have 3 priorities or 3 terms to use them.

From what I read, I think the term you use a priority gives you priority for all the classes you enroll for that term.

All that stuff I posted was taken from the Registrar website–and I think I over did it on the posting, but I was trying to be factual.

Thank you so much SanDiego2010. I love people who research the internet and then share it here. It helps all of us.

^^ I echo momofmv’s sentiments!

Thanks…but that was one longggg post!

I didn’t want to pull something out of nowhere on registration questions, so those website quotes take up alot of space!! I saw some info given to 2009 freshman on a google search that lays out more info., so more to come. Keep checking those portal tabs.

Anyone else back from SOAR? What did you think?

Regarding priorty registration. You can request to use your first priorty registration starting your fourth quarter of enrollment. It doesn’t matter how many units you have accumulated, unlike the UCs. Your regestiation day is determined by your last name and it is still random. Check out this link for future rotations. [Future Registration Appointments - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](<a href=“Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo”>Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo)

You can only register for up to 16units max at your registration time/date. So plan carefully. You can add up to a max of 22 units when registration reopens closer to the start of the quarter.

Hey, do you know how that rotation numbering works?

For example, I look on the [Future Registration Appointments - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](<a href=“Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo”>Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo)
for AAA last name for CONTINUING students and see a “6” then,

I look at [Registration Rotations Schedule Fall 2010 Continuing Students - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](<a href=“Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo”>Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) and AAA last name for Undergrad CONTUNUING students (UGRD) and I don’t see how you get a “6” slot I only can see 4th day, 7th time period.

What am I missing?

Funny, I asked about this topic to start and I think I’m figuring it out. It looks like it works this way:

Each alpha group is assigned a priority that rotates each quarter. That priority was in your first link.

For registration in a specific quarter, each alpha group is divided into two groups based on an alpha split. For example, the #1 spot for fall 2010 is the GRB-HUN group. This group is divided into GRB-HAY and a HAZ-HUN groups. The first sub-group has the top sign-up spot for fall 2010 at 8:00 AM on May 10. The second sub-group gets the second best spot at 9:00am. The number 2 priority group gets the 10:00 and 11:00 slots.

The AAA group you mentioned is in the #6 spot for fall 2010. If you go through the schedule periods they have the 11th and 12th spots for registration, which corresponds to the 6th highest registration priority.

Nice explanation. So the priority spans a couple of time slots. Makes sense now. Thanks.

oops I meant rotation not priority…we were talking about both terms, but they use priority registration to describe using the 3 “wild card” priorities AND the number of your alpha grouping rotation. Not that confusing, but we’re newbies.

Did anyone stay in the Cal Poly Canyon dorms for SOAR? My whole family is going and I thought we would take a chance. Going Aug. 12–wanted to check out farmers market.

They asked if people were staying there during the welcome presenattion. I was surprised how many hands went up!

My son and I were concerned that it would be pretty stark and not very comfortable since you won’t be bringing any of the things a student would bring to make it better. Of course the other part was that there were just two of us. A whole family might work out better because you would have the whole suite to yourself. Then you would be close to the action and get a feel for the dorms. It might work out well.

Originally, I thought it would be nice for our family to stay at Poly Canyon (3 of us), but after reading your comment about how stark it would be, without too many amenities, I decided to go with a hotel down the street. And, actually is was less money. But, I think it would be kind of fun, especially being right on campus able to explore everything closer.
