Soaring/jumping

DocFrance or UN: what determines if a cadet soars or jumps during the summer? Is one more competitive than the other? Is there a minimum gpa?

Jumping is more competitive than soaring. While I don't know of any steadfast requirements to "ensure" a jump slot, staying out of trouble and off of probation is a fair start. Another part of it preference; for example, I chose to do soaring as that's what I really wanted to do.

So if a cadet wanted to soar and wasn't on probation or in trouble they would have the opportunity? And if they didn't?

While there have been minor issues with both, soaring has been known in recent years to be grounded for varying lengths of time, usually when it seems most inconvenient. That means there are no guarantees; a significant number of people in my class didn't get to soar (even though they were scheduled for it) because of this. In general though, I would say your chances are better to soar than jump if that's what you want to do.

Do you get a "soaring badge"?

Unfortunately I did not get my soaring wings. You need 10 flights and I got... 9. It was still a great time, though.

I asked for soaring this summer, and will probably get it (it's on my tentative schedule.) I want to be a soaring IP (Instructor Pilot) so I need to start early. I really want to jump, but I might not be able to. Hopefully I can get it in sometime.

I thought all cadets already had their summer schedules?

One of my biggest goals is to become a glider IP...

I already solo'ed in a powered aircraft, Cessna 172, and im about to start my cross country flights... anyway, will this increase my chances of becoming a glider IP while im there?

As for joining any type of Airmanship Program, any prior experience is helpful. I would say that once you get past the minimum requirements for the position, the rest of it is all about your attitude and personality. I am currently on the Wings of Green Upgrading team that is training to become the 2008 members of the Wings of Blue Skydiving team. For our tryouts, we had a rigorous physical portion that is really just a gut check followed by an interview. 150 some made it to the interviews, but our squad only has 25 that came out of the interview. They are looking for motivated people who have a positive outlook, and love teaching. But the most important thing is to just work hard and be yourself.

Is soaring hard to get into? Speaking medically and academiclly.

"I thought all cadets already had their summer schedules?"

Yeah they came out about the time I posted that, I think. I did in fact get soaring.
