Third Degree Summer Assignments

Does anyone know how the selections for soaring and jump are made during the third degree summer assignment? Do academic, military, and athletic GPA influence the decision? If one does not get chosen for soaring or jump, are one’s chances of obtaining a pilot slot decreased? Also, can soaring or jump be done at any other time? If one is selected for space ops, does that carry a negative connotation?

Thank you.

I remember asking the very same questions...(sigh) oh the memories..haha.

But with my very recent experience. It seems to be based on your grades/OPA and how well your squad is ranked. If you are at the upper end of the ranking scales, then chances are you will get what you want, for most people SOAR or JUMP. There are exceptions, like if the sqaud your in is ranked higher then it will probably be given a few more slots, or less if vice versa.

As far as becoming a Pilot, getting jump or soar has no real effect. If you have the grades and the OPA then you will get that pilot slot(assuming you dont have any major blemishes while being a cadet). However I have heard that being a Soaring Instructor does give a advantage during UPT, all that extra experience in the air.

If you dont get either of the AIRMAN programs 3dig summer you can take the courses during the school year if your schedule allows. So there is still hope. :)

Sadly you cant do both Jump/Soar at the same time. I asked at my orientation..:)

And getting space has 0 negative connotation. Some people prefer it.

If you were on any probations first semester, I think you get denied a Jump/Soar slot. Depends. I don't know if it applies if you got off of probation by the end of the semester. Regardless, do as well as you can so you can be competitive with the selection. Space isn't necessarily a bad thing. I had a couple of friends who did it and they liked the free time they had. There is also Basic Prep (Summer Support). I don't know how people fall into that category but it's just a job where you go around helping with BCT in the summer. My best friend did it.. she didn't really like it, but she got nearly 4 days off one time. Whatev. It's about what you want to do, but you need the averages do be considered more.

Thanks for all your help.
