SOC 130 Social Inequalites

Hi I was wondering if anybody knows which lecturer will be taking this module for Summer 2012 and if he/she is any good? I'll be studying in Berkeley on exchange and would appreciate any advice!

Thanks!

Hmmm apparently it’s going to be taught by Marcel Paret. I took it last summer but it’s going to differ by instructor so I’m not going to be very useful. Here’s the course description:

http://sociology.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/documents/student_services/undergrads/course_descriptions/SU12CD.pdf

I would recommend Soc 131AC with Barlow; I took it last summer and had a great experience. But as far as I can remember Soc 130 had more international students though, so perhaps you’d find that environment more suitable.

Are you from Singapore, by any chance?

Hi Eloriel!

Yeah I’m from Singapore. I thought Social Inequalities seemed like it would be a rather interesting module to take. Have you ever taken a class under Marcel Paret before? :)

Nope I haven’t, I think he(?) isn’t a professor but a GSI (Graduate Student Instructor, something like a TA).

Well I’m from Singapore too, it seems like every summer there are lots of NTU and NUS exchange students… it’s a great experience though! There were many Singaporeans in my Soc 130 class last year too. It depends on the instructor though, it differs vastly with different instructors. When I took it it wasn’t too bad, although I definitely preferred Soc 131AC with Andy Barlow.

Ahh I’ve been advised to stay away from GSIs from a friend who was in Berkeley last year. Would you mind elaborating on what Soc 131AC might cover? I’m guessing it won’t be too far off from last year’s syllabus :)

Yes, it won’t (: Race and Ethnicity in the U.S.; aside from what’s in the course description in the link above, expect to learn about America’s struggle with slavery, the Native Americans, Mexican conquest of places like California and basically the early history of pre-colonial America. How race is defined then and today, the difference between race and ethnicity, illegal immigration and their social implications, gangs and protests, etc.

LOL the course description says to contact the instructor! But that sounds really fascinating. Might take that up! Are there a lot of readings? Wanted to take this as well as a philosophy module but that would mean 8 credits and I’m not sure I can cope with that…

Oh lol you should contact him then! There aren’t too many readings but class participation is very important. His exams are also pretty fair. Btw 8 units is nothing in your case, don’t worry.
