For those of you who went to or visited MIT and were interested in athletics, how would you rate the Soccer scene?
I'm curious to know what you knew/thought/think about the soccer program there, as well as club and intramural soccer.

Thanks so much.

The only sport that MIT really cares about (enough to boost a marginal application) is crew. All other sports are step-children.

What are you looking for?

If it’s division I athletics, you’re not going to find it. If you’re looking for some good fun to have in the IM program, you’ll definitely find it :)

I think the club/IM soccer scene is pretty good due to the relatively high number of internationals.

What about varsity? I know it’s a D3 program, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. I’d love to know more about varsity, such as level of commitment, team atmosphere and all that.

^I think it’s pretty good for the same reasons I gave above. I saw a group of people playing soccer for fun, not even the team, and they looked very good to me.

You probably can find their record easily enough on the web to see how competitive MIT is in D3.

My son said the same about playing for fun - that nearly everyone has played and is really good. He says they’ll play just a quick pickup game (he’s in Simmons so they have the field right in front of their dorm) and people will be like “oh, I wasn’t good enough to make the team in my state/country after age 8” or whatever, and they’ll be just incredible players. He also wore an Arsenal jersey one day in Sept and said it gave him the chance to meet nearly every international student on campus since they all approached him to talk about their favorite team! (Arsenal or not!).

I’m really excited about the MIT soccer team… winning season or not and I hope I get the opportunity to play. I got to spend a fair bit of time on the fields this past summer and had lots of fun!
