Soccer Scholarship

Hey Guys

I''m an international student(italian) and i'm going to apply for several uni for fall 2013

It never crossed my mind to apply to a scholarship (I know very little of scholarships) But when i was taking the SAT test I met a girl who applied for a tennis scholarship to the university of Virginia and they are asking as minimum ony 1000 points on the general sat for all three sections (i dont know if its true , but i heard Harvard ask 1300 points).

As consequence I became very interested and i really would like to know more about sport scholarships .

Having this said , I played soccer at a semi professional level in rgional and national leagues for 7-8 years winning numerous awards and being selected in the Milllwall FC academy(english soccer team) so i tought to give it a try .

I then registered on the NCAA site , but on the informations they require , they also need as mandatory all the reference , phone and email of my soccer coaches since the age 16 (now im 20) . And that's pretty impossible to find coaches of 5 years ago , as i played in different teams and for some i barely remember the name .

Speaking with the same girl i met at the SAT she told me that she didnt apply from the NCAA , but from the Universities direct athletics sites (on the recruiting box) and i have noticed is easier as they ask fewer informations but they also ask informations like have you applied for this university or what is your SPARQ rating and other ratings or are you registered with an NCAA clearinghouse etc .

So as you can see I'm very ignorant on this matter and I'm looking forward for any help or suggestions

Thank you very much,

Willy

First of all, the ivies don’t give sports scholarships, so those are out.

It sounds like you haven’t been keeping up with your sport, so it would seem unlikely that a school would recruit you and offer you a sports scholarships.

If you’re a male, be aware that there are a limited number of sports that offer “full head” sports scholarships…mostly only football and basketball. Many of the other sports are split scholarships/partial heads.

When you say that you played semi pro, were you paid?

Hi mom2collegekids

Well if by “keeping up with your sport” you mean stopped to playing at a semi professional level . Yes I stopped more than a year ago as it was compromising my studies as it was taking me too much time , and as well because I had a small surgery so I decided to stop for a while but never had the will to start again also because I always planned to go to the US .

But if by “keeping up with your sport” you mean to have stopped practicing and playing . No , not at all as I stopped to see it as a job but never stopped to play . I still play it at an amateur level , that in Italy is still a competitive level , but at least I have time to do both things . Study and play .

“You’re a male, be aware that there are a limited number of sports that offer “full head” sports scholarships” I see , the thing is that the main reason im seeking a scholarship is that I “may”(?) have more chances to enter in a good college trough a scholarship if they require as I said lower SAT etc .

And yes . I didnt have a weekly or monthly paid contract but I was paid in base of my performance , goal etc with a big bonus in the end of each season depending in wich position the team arrived . Something like a part time contract . And of course i was paid of all the soccer equipments , hotel (when on away matches) etc

Thank you very much ,

Hopefully someone here knows more about the whole athletic recruitment/scholarship process.

Also, does anyone know if playing semi-pro (getting paid) disqualifies one for NCAA play? I thought it did

And here’s a statement about amateur status eligibility

^^^

From that info, it appears that the OP would not qualify for amateur status since he has been paid.
