How is this class? and would you recommend it?

I took this class last year with Messner. The class was definitely not the most interesting of classes; however it’s a fairly easy class. I’ve heard it’s one of the easiest courses for Category VI. There was very little homework involved besides reading. The midterm and final was also fairly easy, just an essay (given two prompts, choose one) and definitions of terms (where you were also given a list and you could choose). Hope that helps!

Is there a lot of reading? but yes! Thanks for the info.

There was quite a bit of reading, but I’m not sure how much the reading would be compared to other Category VI courses. I think there were about 5 or 6 books we read throughout the semester. Of course, I know many people who didn’t read some or even any of the books, and they still did fine on the exams.

there were about 3 or 4 history/nonfiction type books in my cat-6 class.

cat-6 is not usually the “reading” GE - it’s the cat-5’s that have the huge number of books…

wowow. that is a lot of reading… thanks for the info niubie!

jbusc, what class did you take?

I took HIST 225.

I don’t think 5 books for a semester is particularly heavy for a 4 unit college class…you’re usually given far advance notice of what you need to read, and you’re usually not required to really memorize specific anything from them.

And, college is about the art of the skim read :)

(though admittedly I love to read…I can understand how other people might find the reading requirements to be large…)

Kaplan teaches soci 150 - fyi she was one of the lowest rated professors on the late senatecourseguide

she gives questions on her test asking about random obscure facts from the reading - like x million americans smoke and you have to know the number
although most are multiple choice

thankfully i had a chill dude as my TA
