Social changes at Duke

Hi all,

How many of you guys didn't really drink/party before you went to Duke (but were rather focused, studious, "responsible" teens), but changed when you arrived at Duke (under the different atmosphere/peer pressure, etc.)? Just curious..

Also, was the process of "loosening-up" in college really awkward, or did it come naturally? Unlike most others on cc, I'm not really concerned about Duke's academics (which are great), but more the social aspects. Thanks!

Duke is full of kids who were often grinds in high school or uber serious as students. Many kids at Duke are “new” to having full social lives. In high school my own sons started school at 7am and worked till midnight many nights to get their work and the music and the sports done. You will find you have more time for your social being at Duke and that this is a new experience for a large segment of students. “Awkward” and new to socializing a Lot is not unusual there at all.

anyway, back to student opinions.

Loosening up comes pretty naturally because no one will judge you: you’re surrounded by peers going through the same experience.

With that said, do be careful. I know people who went completely crazy the first few weeks and did things that they still regret. Ease into the new social norms with a group of good people, and you’ll be fine. Stop worrying. =)
