Social Event options at Rice?

I'm an incoming freshman, and I was wondering how "crazy" Rice's social scene is. I'm not much into partying, so are there a lot of alternative social events for students who prefer more low key events? (NOD kind of scares me lol)

The simple answer to your question is yes. But in my experience so far, the freshmen who aren’t into the whole party scene get into it. The reason being that we’re all smart and quirky here, and so we all are somewhat socially awkward. That foundation helps ease everyone into partying and even start to enjoy it. Plus, you’ll find that you need that kind of release on the weekends after a hard work week. Feel free to PM me if you wanna talk about it more…

Rice’s social scene offers something for everyone. I didn’t party at all in high school and I never felt pressured to start partying while at Rice. Granted, there is a small group of people who act more “fratty” than others but these people tend to congregate in certain areas of the residential colleges, so it’s not like all of Rice is some party atmosphere you can’t escape. You will definitely find people who aren’t into partying, and there are a ton of social events you can participate in if you don’t want to drink. The residential college system makes it really easy to make large groups of friends…you will definitely have a healthy social life :)

The fact that the public parties are themed makes it easier for everyone to have fun, regardless of whether they’re drinking or not. For instance, Sid’s 80s party is FANTASTIC either way–you get to dress up in your best Madonna outfit, rock out to live 80s music with your best friends…what more could you want?

Regarding NOD: the party is completely optional and you won’t feel pressured to attend. There are always a ton of other options that night (Night of Innocence at Sid, NODgeball at the Rec Center, various Halloween events across campus) and Rice tries really hard to ensure that there is a healthy amount of various social options aside from drinking/partying.

Hopefully that answered your question! Feel free to PM me if you want more specifics!

About the Rice social scene: We have a bunch of parties, but there is always something to do if you don’t feel like going. Additionally, no one is going to shun you or view you in a negative light for not partying. If you ever do warm up to it, you won’t be viewed as an outsider. People are very accepting here.
