Social Events at Brown

DCircle and Jamesah1 and whoever else currently goes to Brown, can you describe its major social events?

on any given night there is usually a lot going on, but there actually aren't that many events that seem to bring the entire campus together in the way that say, winter carnival might at dartmouth.

that being said, the few events on this scale that do occur are pretty awesome.

During the College Hill Kick Off at the beginning of the fall, bands usually play on an outdoor stage in wriston quad. all of the frats and program houses on wriston and patriots court open their doors and hold all kinds of student performances in their lounges--a capella, really impressive dance groups (fusion), stand-up, and sometimes zanny stuff like fire-eating. And of course there is lots of free food.

Spring Weekend is a big deal--four days long at Brown. Thursday night there is a concert with three mediocre bands (usually one-hit wonders). Friday night there are tons of parties. Saturday there is a huge concert on the main green with a big national act (this year Ben Folds is headlining). Sunday, Dave Binder plays a concert on Wriston--he is a beloved old man with a Ukelele that somehow gets lots of drunken college kids to engage in entertaining and often off-color sing-alongs (might not sound like fun, but many people look forward to Dave Binder more than anything else)

Live on Lincoln is another favorite--kind of hard to describe. A big tent on Lincoln Field, lots of good pie and apple cider, lots of singer/songwriter kinds of performances.

On Halloween people gather in a spooky Sayles Hall with blankets and listen to the University organist do his thing on the world's largest hutchings-votey organ--the sound reverbrates through the entire hall, you can feel it vibrating in your chest. it's very soothing.

The two campus-wide parties that are the most popular are Sex Power God in the fall and Star***** in the spring. People talk about what they are going to wear months in advance and tickets can get scalped for over $100. Star***** was even referenced on the Sopranos. (It's a pretty scandalous party--people usually show up wearing almost nothing)

those are some off of the top of my head...hope this answers your questions

When is spring weekend, do you know?

My brother told me he went to SexPowerGod wearing a grass skirt and a thong, and I begged him never to tell me anything of that sort again.

Wow, I am looking forward to that.

me too. it sounds awesome.

Star***** = the annual naked party? Or is that something else?

Do you want to go to the naked party lol

Sure, why not? :)

Where is your modesty, woman lol

Well, are you planning on going?

I don't know lol

Aren't they by invitation only?

Yeah but my sister said it was pretty easy to get invited.

I bet this conversation probably scared a few parents.

I'll wait to think about it until I get invited then lol

Scared a few parents? Goodness, it scared me!

sorry, ill stick to discussing the weather :)

It's rainy here lol

its about 40 degrees here...the forecasters had predicted a snowstorm for yesterday but it turned out to be too warm for the snow, so we still had school

My sympathies.

My sympathies for your TB-like cough.
