Social life at brown?

Is there a social life at brown and if so what does it include?

kids who go to brown are generally social ppl ..so that breeds a social life at Brown. although I don't go there yet, and am finding out thursday whether I will be or not, I do know that Brown has parties like all the other ivies. And obviously, I don't know any specifics. Hahah sorry for my lackk of insight. In all honesty, I just wanted to be a nice person and give you a response.

besides, there are like madd threads on Brown's social life. You should check those out. Hah

Yeah, check out the previous threads on this subject.

In short though, in my experience, you have to be pretty antisocial to not have stuff to do at Brown. I very often find myself with 4 or 5 parties/other things to do on friday and saturday nights. On weeknights, there are still parties, but also concerts and lectures and workshops and maybe homework. Most people I know have a pretty varied network of friends and lots of opportunities to slack off with all of them. If you're bored at Brown, you're doing something wrong.

<--- Ballroom Dance Team, OffBeat (Hip-Hop), Mezcla (Latino Dances), Filipino Alliance (Cultural & Hip-Hop Dances)

<--- Also procrastinating EC0011 HW =D

But seriously, social life is amazing here. If you didn't know too many interesting people back home, you will in the fall =D

haha ken estrellas is that you?!

the ballroom dance team is like the best on earth, ever, i bet SecAge003 will agree with me :)

I think that could be Chris Carrera...

And yes, there is a "social life" here-- there is a reason we're Princeton Review's Happiest College and it's not becuase we spend 24hrs working or sleeping.

haha is chris in mezcla? but chris doesnt talk like that, and i've checked with ken, and it is indeed him. but its funny how we can actually identify people from the activities and classes. saying that it's chris was a really good guess too :) ah, i love brown!

I'm not sure if Chris is in Mezcla but I can imagine him doing it and I know he loves ballroom.

I'll comment on the social scene since, whether good or bad, its the one area I really have gotten to know in my year here at Brown. I transferred from a smaller LAC and have visited friends at several other Ivies and different schools back home in California. Brown boasts the most diverse, all encompassing social scene of any school I have visted (only to be met by Stanford.) While Brown is often generalized as the most progressive or alternative of the Ivies, I have come to see it as a school where any type of student will find his or her niche and thrive within that niche. The athletes are happy, the engineers are happy, the frats are (extra) happy, etc. etc. Wednesday nights at the downtown bar Fish Company probably best encapsulate our social scene- kids from all walks of life and all different scences on campus flock to Fishco in groves if they have gotten their work done, while the Rock and SciLi are packed with kids until 4 in the morning or later. There is something going on for someone every night of the week, but there is never any pressure to go out if you have work and there is never any pressure to drink ANYWHERE if you are a non-drinker. I have had friends have great nights at Thete, "the football frat", without drinking or feeling the pressure I know is associated with athletic/fraternity culture as most other schools. Ironically, the abundance of social opportunities every night has probably turned me into a better student; several times a week I'll wake up three or four hours before my 12 o'clock class to get a headstart on that nights homework so that I can finish up the rest of my work after classes and make it to my IM basketball game, watch a friends a capella show, watch 24 with my buddies or go to whatever else is happening that night. Also, I know very few people who allow the social scene to interfere with their academics; every student at Brown is here for the same one reason, to get an unmatched undergraduate education, and work always comes first. I repeat what someone posted above about this optimal combination attributing to Brown students being ranked the happiest of any university.

modestmelody: haha yup, chris does love ballroom, i've been his dance partner for two competitions and he's willing to practice ballroom on the main green at midnight when no other dance rooms are open.

Actually, Chris ALMOST tried out for Mezcla, but didn't due to time contraints. Wise man. Modestmelody, you know Chris... who are you? ^_^
