So I am a current high school junior, but already know that I want to apply ED to Barnard. I think I have a chance of getting in (Double legacy at Columbia, 2 summers of Barnard pre-college program) but had a few questions about the social scene at Barnard:

1: BOYS! It is an all girls school, so how hard is it to meet boys? I haven’t had any bfs in high school, because I go to an extremely sports/football oriented hs, so its hard to have a conversation with most of them. I want to get married early, so boys are an important factor.

Partying. I like to have fun, and want to go to NYC in part because of the nightlife. What is the nightlife like at Barnard? Do girls go clubbing downtown, or frat parties, or what/

Sororities. I’d like to join one at Columbia, but was wondering how difficult the pledge process is, and what is social life like for a girl in a sorority.

Meeting boys is not a problem. I made a bunch of Columbia friends during orientation, which established a social life for me across the street, as well as joined a couple inter-school groups that have plenty of boys. In my three years so far I have had two long-term boyfriends. I recently was complaining to my friend about boy annoyances, and she jokingly suggested I transfer to a women’s college.

Again, my social scene revolves strongly around my club involvement. There are parties all over the place on the weekends. I do have some friends who prefer to explore the city on weekends, which is also cool. I was never really one for clubs or frat parties, yet I enjoy my fair share of loud, dancing, inebriated fun.

http://bwog.com/2010/10/04/expect-a-decision-on-barnard-greek-life-recognition-by-december/ Barnard’s involvement in Greek life is currently up in the air.

Barnard does not have the most active social life, though of course it can be found. Perhaps you should focus on Columbia.

That said, DD had a number of friends from Barnard in the coed fraternity at Columbia and friends in the sorority too. I don’t think anyone had difficulty pledging.

Thanks, guys. I’ve actually called Barnard, and they say that they consider that legacy, but I’m confident I have a chance at getting in on my own merit. I like to party, and dont plan on spending tons of time on homework. So, I don’t know if Barnard is the best choice.

Second Mythmom. This is like joining the marines because you like the beach. Even social butterflies like D2 work very hard. An old Columbia alum who is a long time friend of mine told me that had hated taking classes at Barnard (in the 60s) because the “girls were always studying” and he wanted to play football. There are few party types, but they might not do well.
