Social life AND 4.0?

I’m a transfer student from a CC whos trying to decide between UCD and UCLA. I’m wanting to go to medical school, so i’m aiming to get close to a 4.0. However, after being stuck at a CC for 2 years, I’m really wanting a social life (and a girlfriend). How easily to transfer students mix with the rest of the students? How hard is it to get good grades, and have a social life? Views on UCLA V. UCD?

I personally am not a college student, but I have quite a few friends who go to Davis and LA and they say they’re both pretty social campuses.

I’m a biology major going into pre-health, and trying to decide between UCD and UCLA as well! Except I will be a freshman lol, but I would say…choose by what school can offer you more academically (you can wait another two years). :)

I have the exact same question!

first off: y’all should get out of the pre-med OMG4.0GPA!11! mentality. :] not only will people like you more (including your TAs! dude, science TAs like hatehatehate grade-grubbin’ premeds. haha.) but you will actually ENJOY your classes for what they are, not for what grade they could potentially give (or not give) you.

that being said… no UC is easy, Davis included. this quarter, i had a teacher who WOULD. NOT. CURVE. no ifs, ands, or buts. midterm averages? 68% and 70%, respectively… yes, that amounts to over 1/2 the class failing. (he made it up by adding 18 points of extra credit at the end… but still. you get the picture.) so yeah, going to Davis =/= easy ride. you’ll still have to work for your grades. it’s just that here at Davis, you have substantially less people who don’t study and ace the class with an a. ;]

i really love Davis because everyone here is so nice! the academic atmosphere is GREAT! even when a class IS curved, people still help each other out. it warms my little Aggie heart to see people on the chatrooms in Smartsite (our course webpage-like thingys) going, “hi [name], here’s how you do number 36 for ochem. [insert typed out solution.]” i can’t really say what the academic atmosphere is like at UCLA, so i won’t comment here. :]

as for social life + good grades… completely plausible. i’m a second-year science major + lib arts minor, taken 17+ units each quarter (usually around 16 academic. yay for gym classes!), active in clubs + have a serious research internship (meaning, i actually get to run experiments in the lab), hang out with friends on a regular basis/actually do fun schtuff with my friends, and my GPA is above a 3.9. not perfect… but i’m pretty damn satisfied. ;] time management is key though!

i haven’t seen transfer students have a lot of trouble adjusting, so i do think you’ll be fine as long as you don’t slack off. ^^

UCLA is Southern Cal and UCD is Northern Cal Aggie. Huge differences in the communities and lifestyles. If this is important to your happiness be sure to explore these differences. You will be much more “successful” (however you personally define it) if you like where you live.

sutoroberrii I will definitely ask you more questions later on.!

sutoroberrii is dead on.
