Social Life at Vanderbilt

I've seen a significant number of posts on here that suggests that Vanderbilt may not be a fit for me. I'm an Asian from SoCal and at this point, I'm seriously considering going to Vanderbilt but I'm worried that i won't fit in. Can anyone tell me what people are really like there?

This may sound dumb, but is there even a little bit of discrimination of any kind? and is Greek life really that dominant?

Thanks a lot!!!

Not to sound uncaring, but there’s a ton of threads on this topic already. Do you have a specific question concerning the discrimination or Greek life? If not, this thread is probably going to turn into the usual back and forth arguments.

No, only 30 percent of the school is actually greek. There’s plenty of opportunities for everyone, and there’s no discrimination.

There are more people from New York than there is from Texas and more people from OUTSIDE the South than those from the South. You’ll be fine, but regardless you should still visit since the campus is beautiful and you’ll see if you fit in.

As a current student, I totally agree with previous posts. Vanderbilt far less Greek and far less Southern than people often believe. That is not to say these are insignificant on campus, they hardly are this. But they are certainty not as domineering as people may be lead to believe.

As a side note, I don’t know how the notion of discrimination or social stigma against minorities ever came up, but it holds very little truth.

About 30% of men are in fraternities and 50% of women in sororities. The school as a whole is about 40% greek. But any weekend on campus, it feels way more than that. On campus social lives are dominated by the Greek scene. But a lot of Asian girls do join sororities.

i wonder why this is such a frequently discussed topic… i don’t see how it could really be so terrible. D is ready to commit but is getting a little hung up on these issues. i just don’t get how it could be that hard to find a group of people to relate to at a school this size, greek or not.

i definately agree with troiscubed

Yes greek life is huge, and it does have a huge precedence on campus if you keep looking at it.

weekends you find plenty of parties along greek row. monday through saturday, people are drinking over there. tuesdays/thursdays/fridays/saturdays a majority of people do go out.

The whole point is to try the system, if you like it join. if not, don’t. nobody is going to force you to join. it is your choice. If you don’t join, there are stll other things, as long as your social, you’ll still have things to do.

Different clubs on campus have their own parties. Ex: choir kids have parties, band kids, etc.

My roomate is similar to you, and asian girl but from Boston. I am from the area and she fits in better than I do!! There are many students from Cali and outside of the south here.

I am not Greek, but I still have friends and have a really good time. As long as you get involved in stuff, you won’t be hurting for friends.
