I just heard that most students are from queens and long island area, and apparently I am from a very preppy town in connecticut. How is it like at stony brook? Are city people very different from sub-urban people? Do I need to make a big adjustment?

Depending on your definition of "very preppy town"... yeah, it might be a bit of an adjustment. Which I don't think is a bad thing. The racial, ethnic, and economic mix probably won't be what you're used to--Stony Brook's student body is very diverse. That said, you won't be the only one in a new situation. A decent number of people come from fairly preppy towns in New York too, which I suspect aren't that culturally different from their counterparts in Connecticut. Any differences are definitely manageable. I have friends from preppy towns in Ohio, rural Oregon, urban California, and suburban Illinois who have adjusted just as well as or better than people who grew up in Queens, Brooklyn, or 10 minutes from campus. There are some obvious differences in cultural norms in urban vs. suburban areas; the only ones that I've seen cause any conflict in and of themselves are when one roommate is used to sleeping through car alarms and sirens and the other gets woken up when someone walks by, or when one roommate can't imagine ever leaving anything unlocked ever and the other is used to leaving doors open.

The phrasing of your question makes me wonder if you've spent any time in any decent sized cities. If that's a sign of a more generally sheltered lifestyle, you'll probably have bigger adjustments to make in college than getting used to New Yorkers :)
