Social Life/Greek Life/Athletic Life at Villanova

Hi!

I'm a rising senior from Bergen County New Jersey and I'm completely in love with Villanova. Its a target/safety school for me and I just had some questions on the social aspects, the greek life, and the athletic life at the school.

I have heard from a lot of people that the social aspect is great. The people are nice, the parties are great, and its just a great experience. Is this true? In addition, I am interested in joining a sorority and was wondering which was the best to rush into. Any feed back on this would be great!

On a different note, I have been a competitive cheerleader since the first grade and I'm considering trying out for the coed cheer team at Villanova. However, my high school treated the cheerleaders quite awfully at games and I purposely did not cheer at my high school for this reason. What is the perception of cheerleaders at Villanova, and more importantly is the cheer team close knit or catty? I will be a premed major and do not want athletic life to affect my grades or hinder my ability to make friends and go out. Any thoughts on this?

Any or all feedback is welcome, thank you guys!

I’m a student at Nova right now and I think the social life is really amazing here. People are pretty nice all around and there are definitely parties out there. The campus has a lot of organized events, movies, and a lot of people enjoy going outdoors to play frisbee, catch, exercise, run, or even just to sit and socialize, and even in the winters people go out to enjoy the snow. There is also philly nearby which is easily accessible by the train. I’m not in a sorority so I can’t really answer your second question but I do know a few people in the cheerleading team and they seem pretty knit and happy with the experience. I think with time management its definitely possible to balance between premed and athletic life. Hope this helps!

There is the “official” Cheerleading team and there are a few other "Dance teams " that participate at athletic events. Nothing negative about cheer or dance teams at Villanova (it’s not high school)

I would say that it depends highly on your major how your experience goes. The running joke, though it’s actually true, is that the business students get the least amount of work and have the most amount of time to have fun. If you’re in the business program, you’ll be well pampered. This isn’t the case with the other colleges. The sciences are quite rigorous. Interestingly, biology majors come in with the highest SAT scores/GPAs among all the students in the university, including the business students. So bio and I believe the case is for the other sciences, are big time drainers.

IF you’re a bright person, you can definitely do well academically and socially. However, most of the bio majors that I know are extremely academic, and socially inept, or very involved, but struggling academically…or the third category which is socially inept and academically unqualified.

However, we do have tutoring services which can help students out.

I hope I don’t sound too negative. You’ll have a good time interacting with your fellow science majors. However, one drawback is that because of how time consuming classes such as Organic chemistry, genetics, gen bio, cell bio, physics etc… are, you tend to lose touch with your non science friends, unless you participate in an extracurricular activity. So when you begin freshman year, event though they encourage people to branch out and become friends with people outside of your college I would actually recommend against doing that. As you take less and less core classes, the opportunities to take the same classes as your close nonscience friends diminish and you will inevitably find yourself throwing away a few good friendships, and getting closer to your science/similar Major friends.

The cheer team at villanova is great. They’re very close and it’s really not that time consuming since you’ll most likely go to the basketball games or football games either way as a spectator. Plus, you also get to work out and socialize, so that essentially covers the core components that you should pursue for a social and health life at Villanova.

Do the kids use the little towns around Villanova or go into Philadelphia?

both, but mostly the nearby towns out of convenience. Obviously for big events like st. patties, dayglow, sports games, we go to philly.

I saw that Princeton Review ranked Villanova super high for school spirit a couple years ago! It was up there with all the BIG public schools like UMichigan, Wisconsin, Alabama, UTexas, etc. Is that right? Is there a lot of school spirit?

yes. People really enjoy the basketball team. If you don’t understand bball, it’s okay. However, a lot of people here play pickup basketball and if you’re not good at it, then life kinda sucks.
