social life

I'm applying to pretty elite schools for engineering. I'm anticipating a lot of work, but I've always been a very social person. I love my friends, sports, and especially girls. Can any engineering students give me an idea of what its going to be like?

Depends on the school and its nearby environment I would guess. Might want to tell everyone what school you're thinking about attending.

There is plenty of time to have a life in college, regardless of your choice of study

My friend is a freshman engineering student and he is also a starting football player and is currently pledging at a fraternity. He definitely has a social life.

What does that mean? You can have plenty of social life at any school as long as you are not accepted into a cohort of students who are much more accomplished academically. I mean if you are spending your time playing catch up........I guess you could take 5 years to graduate as some do but otherwise you are gonna be fine.

Depends on the school and course load. Im a frosh eng major with a huge load. 6 classes. Including 3 labs. Basically my only 'free time' is sometimes on the weekend at night. Sometimes late night on a school time thats about it.

I think it really depends on the school. At UW Madison, everybody, especially engineer majors (and ones like me who take 17 credits) , works very hard durring the week and social activity is generally limited to neighbors/roommates. However, it is common practice here to schedule your classes so that your weekend starts on "Thirsty Thursday" and even people with heavy loads go out and party. I meet new girls every weekend, and you can always go hang out with your friends. The friendships you have in college will not be as close as your highschool ones, but you will have many more, and more fun together too.

id apply to vanderbilt, they offer engineering and the school has arguably the best social life out of any academic school (not to mention attractive girls).

Engineering, elite? Try UIUC, top five in all Engineering, number 1 in Civil E. I have friends there who are loving it. And yes, the girls are also very attractive. UIUC has the total package. It's no brainer if you're engineering and in-state.

cornell has one of the best engineering programs in the nation ... tons of work mon-fri , party weekends. this is typical to most engineering schools in the nation

no place has a more complete package than madison. you simply cannot beat the mix. It may not be the most prestigous, but its up there. It may not have girls as hot as you see in california, but believe me, they're hot. and, aside from the excellent nightlife, we proudly own the title of #1 party school in the nation. Tell me, at your college, when cops see you drunk (and I look like i'm about 16) they just ask you if you think you can make it back to the dorms okay? and if your not drunk, there are plenty of not-drunk girls to hang out with? and then, when its all said and done, I will have an engineering degree from one of the more prestigous schools in the country, and I will only have paid $3,900/ semester for it with MN reciprocity. All that money saved pays for a lot of miller lite. sorry i seem cocky, but I LOVE it here, and if you can get in-state tuition, it's a no-brainer.
