social life...?

I guess this is mostly directed to current students.

I know that the conception that Hopkins is "where the fun goes to die" is one of the most frustrating things for current students....but I'm wondering why the rumor exists if it doesn't hold at least some truth.

I would be an IR major (therefore largely avoiding the pre-med/ BME fuss). The plain truth is: I want to have a damn good time in college. I want to have stories to tell my friends back home and I want to rave about my college years when I'm old and decrepit (yes, I'm definitely considering going greek).

I would love the Hopkins (wholeheartedly), If I knew that I could have a good time. (I know this makes me sound a little obnoxious- but college only happens once)

Also just FYI, I'm choosing between Swarthmore, Middlebury, Cornell, Colgate, NYU, Boston College, and Hopkins. Any comments on those schools would be welcome as well :)

Thanks in advance!!

ps. I'm also big on school spirit/ pride. Do people actually go to lax games or is the team just good?

Hey! I’m a current freshman so hopefully I can help answer your questions. I had the exact same concern after I had my acceptance to Hopkins.

I found out that “where fun goes to die” is actually UChicago’s motto, but that’s besides the point.

Let me just tell you that I am having an amazing time here. Actually amazing. There is definitely a social scene, people love going out and having fun, going to frat parties, local bars, etc. I already have a lot of stories that I can tell my children (even though I probably wouldn’t want to share a lot of them!). I’m also in the process of pledging a fraternity which is a great experience, Greek Life here is small (about 25%) but it’s definitely active; however, you dont need to be Greek to be in the social scene.

There is definitely school spirit at lacrosse games (the stadium is always packed), but not so much for the other D3 sports. However, people are definitely proud to attend Hopkins - it’s a great institution!

My daughter, a relatively recent JHU graduate, jokes that Hopkins is a “closet party school.” She and her friends partied pretty hard (they also worked very hard) but, after all, there was the “where fun goes to die” reputation to uphold so they couldn’t talk about it :)

Hey I’m a prospective IR major too, and I want the same experience you do. From what I’ve read, it pretty much seems like you’ll have a good time if you try to. Many people say they love it at JHU. I think it’s really dependent on what you’re expecting.

The social scene is definitely not nonexistent. It’s there. You can have A LOT of fun here. But in my experience it can get pretty repetitive. I’m in a fraternity and pretty much all of our parties are always the same. Some people stop going to frat parties after freshman year and start having smaller dorm/apartment parties. Hopkins is certainly not “where fun goes to die” but it’s no state school either.
