Social Life????

I've heard really bad things about the social life at Vassar.
But how are the parties? Is Vassar a boozey school or a reefer school?? or whatever?

What have you heard?

There are plenty of parties. Half the campus is high 24/7. If you want to drink, there are tons of opportunities; if you don't, there are tons of other things to do. If you're looking for a typical "party school," you're looking in the wrong place. There are always parties on Friday and Saturday nights, there are generally things to do on Thursdays, but the other days of the week tend to be quiet. (No matter the day, or time of day, there are usually a bunch of high people wandering around.)

yeah, I heard that Vassar is just in the middle of nowhere and that people there do absolutely nothing but study and that they are prettty snooty.

But don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not looking for the typical party school. I'm trying to major in Playwriting/Screenwriting, and I feel like Vassar is a great place to develope my writing skills but I just just turned off by the whole social thing...

thanks so much for your response it!! it definitely helps a ton!

High 24/7? Is this true? How can Vassar be academically challenging if half of its kids are high all the time?
This sounds very bad.

I don't know anybody who is high 24/7. Granted, a lot of kids at Vassar smoke weed. But I can't think of a single person who prioritizes getting high ahead of doing well in class.

I can think of a few... fantastic people, really.

And 24/7 may have been a bit of an exaggeration. Key word being "a bit."

Vassar doesn't have a playwriting/screenwriting major, so you might be a little off-base starting right there... it's not exactly in the middle of nowhere, either. Poughkeepsie is kind of a dump, but it's fairly big and it's only an hour and a half away from NYC. And yes, there are a lot of snotty people here, but they're fairly easy to avoid. (And they're great for entertainment. For real.)

Regarding doing "absolutely nothing but studying," well, at any "highly ranked" college, you kind of have to study a lot. If you aren't looking for that in college, a school like Vassar might not be the right place for you. But honestly? Nobody is working THAT much. You might work a lot during the week, but you can always make time to go out on the weekends. It's about balancing your time and maybe working really hard one week and then relaxing a little more the next week. I promise it's not a boring school. Just the opposite... really.

i live in the vassar area and while i have visited a few times but not "partied" there, this is a lot to do outside the campus but it is hard if you don't have a car. right near vassar is a street lined with eclectic cafes/used book stores/etc but travelling outside further such as going to the mall, bout 15 mins, theres a more city vibe although its not nyc. it's still fun, i have fun here and its more about who you are with i guess than where you are sometimes but poughkeepsie can be a fun city. the Chance is nearby where lots of famous bands have been and its really personal/easy to meet bands, etc except i wouldn't wander around the inner city of poughkeepsie to be honest, kind of scary. anyhoo if you have a car, and let some locals show you around, fun times. hanging out near the hudson river is fun too. with that said, i am not attending vassar since it's too close but beautiful campus nevertheless...
