Hello! I have been admitted to UCSB for Fall 2011 but i'm really having a hard time picking from UCSB and Cal Poly SLO. I believe that UCSB is a little bit better academically for my major (Political Science) and it would be cheaper for me (Full financial aid with only a $7k loan). However, I'm really worried about the social scene. I feel like partying takes over the lives of UCSB students. How much does the partying affect academics? I want to go to a fun school, but I also want a school where I can learn and do well in school. Other than IV, what else is there to do for fun?

Also, I've heard that students seem to be very unmotivated at UCSB, and that professors don't teach (teacher aides do, but is that normal?). I've also heard that UCSB is very superficial and materialistic, which is something I really wanted to get away from during college (since I live in Orange County). All of these things are things I've read in online forums from other people, can anyone support or refute these claims? Please HELP!

if the students are so unmotivated why does SB go up in ranking every year? To get into SB it’s usually a bright kid and I don’t think they’ll give studying for partying.

I know, I was shocked when I read a lot of the reviews from students about SB, which got me really worried that I wouldn’t fit in. I’m hoping that visiting the campus will give me a better idea of what SB is like :)

I care if they’re motivated because as a political science major, I will be taking a lot of classes at include debating and opinions. I want my classmates to participate and not just be hungover the whole time. Class is funner when people are motivated, paying attention, and participating in the lecture.

@tsilva11, if you can’t find anyone, you can always do that with me even though I am not a political science major … I am a computer science major, so my thoughts (in general and in most cases) tends to be rather logical …

yeah, I just hope the people in my class will be excited, because I often find that when the students are involved in the lecture or debate, it’s less boring and easier to understand.

well, since I am in computer science, I really don’t care what the others are doing during class, it would be hilarious if they are hung over and just fall off their chair during lecture, hee hee hee
I guess we are looking for different things …

From what I’ve heard from my friends who go there the kids work really hard and then they party really hard. A lot more people seem to be able to balance studying and partying than you would think =)

that sounds perfect! i don’t mind if people party, it’s what college is about in a way lol and i don’t know yet, probably after i visit both schools…so like, mid april
