Social Scene at Bowdoin

I was recently accepted into Bowdoin’s class of 23. One of my parents went to Bowdoin so I have been visiting my whole life and love the school. My only concern is about the social scene there. I like to go out with my friends now and ideally I would like to go into greek life (I have friends in greek life now that Ive heard a lot about it from). Obviously, Bowdoin doesn’t have greek life. I was hoping any current students or recent graduates could provide some insight to the social scene. Does Bowdoin party hard? or at all?

If Greek life or similar is important to you, Bowdoin probably isn’t the right school for you.

It’s not something extremely important to me. I’m just trying to get a better understanding of the school as it’s not something they talk about at info sessions.

Hi! congrats on your acceptance! I am a first-year student at Bowdoin. Bowdoin’s social scene is definitely less happening than a larger school, but Bowdoin students do still party. Because of our smaller student body, the party scene is extremely inclusive and I have never heard of anyone having difficulty getting into a party, There is usually some kind of party going on thursday, friday and saturday night. In my opinion, the social house system we have offers all the good parts of greek life without the bad. They still provide a place for students to form close residential relationships and host social events, but they are co-ed, more diverse, and inclusive because you don’t “rush” or “pledge.” the school sorts people into houses to created mixed communities of students who are committed to creating a thriving social life on campus. Each house receives 5-6 thousand dollars a year for programming, which goes to all kinds of events: parties, concerts, interesting speakers, etc.

Thank you!
